The Deaf Child

A Mythology of the Deaf Experience

05.11.01 - Wanting to be a Teacher

56th clip. 4:56 minutes long. Total: 5:09:53 hours.

This Deaf Child mythology website continues to be delightfully revised. The deafhood question(s) is now signed out in ASL. A table of content is added on the side where viewers can click on each clip directly. This website is an original - ASL literature inside a book in the internet with text, video, pictures, and everything connected interactively. Let me know if there is a website similar to this as I would love to see them and learn more in order to improve this website - before eventually someday moving everything into my own website, not as a blog attached with deafread using wordpress.

Myth Commentary: This clip is about the deaf child, now as the deaf teen, looking into what Siepee was doing in his office-garden. This is a classic example of a main character observing a superior, a person above, or someone powerful who s/he emulates and wants to become.

Deaf History Commentary: This clip is focused on the time when the Deaf Child first expressed a desire to become a teacher. Famous deaf teachers, for example - Jean Massieu, Laurent Clerc, Bernard Bragg, and Bob Davila - once thought of becoming teachers. They did become one. Clerc and Berthier were students in the school where they later became teachers. There might be some historical sources on deaf people expressing desire to become teachers, yet every deaf teacher, at least, did think of becoming one.

The “farm” in the back of the monastery/school where the Deaf Child worked actually existed in the old days. Most schools for the deaf and Gallaudet University in the 19th and early 20th century once had various farms such as dairy, chicken, vegetables or fruit trees to provide food and agricultural and horticultural training.

Siepee’s “garden” at the beginning of the clip where the Deaf Child walked into actually exists at the deaf school in Paris. In the summer of 1992, I actually did observe the hearing director of the deaf school conversing with several other people in the same garden-office. I had the same old feeling many deaf people have about being separated/alienated by the hearing people running their own schools or institutions. Only until deaf people became directors or superintendents, they became more accessible to the students themselves. Here below is a short two minutes video about that incident.

Deafhood Questions: Have you ever wanted to be a teacher just like the deaf teacher(s) you had? Or wanting to be someone like a deaf or hearing person(s) just because you wanted to prove to others the deaf people can do that? Here below is the video on these two questions. Click here at DVTV for delightful responses to the questions.

Clip Quote: “Dream Big, You Go Further.”
