The Deaf Child

A Mythology of the Deaf Experience

03.07.01 - The Deaf Baby

26th clip. Title: The Deaf Baby - 7th of 3rd c. of DC Myth. 6:35 minutes long. Total: 2:24:40.

Posted with many good wishes to the DeafRead team in hosting their conference in San Francisco. Vblog technology, live webcasting, and the emergence of a geninue public “sub-altern” discourse on “deaf-ness/dom/hood” give great opportunities and promises to deaf people everywhere.

  1. Charles, thank you for spending so much time and energy on this important project. As a Fremont student in 1992, I recall watching you tell the story with intrigue and realizing how well the story helped me to understand the history of our people. Likewise, thank you to all others who have contributed, such as Mitch Kurs and Ron/Hedy Stern.

Thank you, Jack, for your kind words. It took/is taking/will take time and energy, I felt, well spent for that both deaf and hearing people have better understanding and appreciation of our tragic and beautiful history. Namaste’

  2. I’m still a devoted viewer. I loved this chapter. It reminded me a little of the girl in the story of Whalerider. Wanting to belong is a universal desire. It touches the heartstrings.

Ah, Whalerider from the Maoris. Oh yes . . . Very early in the myth, you have seen (tapped upon) the (deaf) universal property of this story, and 9 more chapters to go . . . Amazing! Mythology (and on the other side of the very same coin - “religion”) is organic to the mind(s) and soul(s) of a cultural/language group and we see something like this emerging among us, the deaf.

  3. Hello my friend and teacher, Sure do hope you and your family is having a much needed rest from work and school. As for me it is about shopping and grandkids. I did enjoy this piece from your beautiful story. VisMa meets the Deaf babychild and realizes all humanity, no matter how different, want emotional attachment to others and have common beliefs they share. All any of us want is to love and be loved, to belong and be a part of others lives. Thank you for your hard work on the Deaf Child. I hope to see another part real soon. Bless you on this your journey to the truth, Jeanne Walker P.S. And the truth shall set you free!
