DustJacket of the DC Deafhood WorkBook
A picture here of the cover of the current draft of the The Deaf Child: A Mythology - A Deafhood Workbook. Notice something? The title of the book is in ASL when you open and close the book repeatedly! ASL Interpretations of the bookcover are numerous. WINGS: Seeing on the Wings of An Owl (bird or VisMa). ANGEL: Signing and Visicentricity are the Angel’s Wings (salvation) of the Deaf Soul (or, if I may humbly add, of Humanity). FLY: Visicentricity makes the Deaf Soul fly-soar. Now, let’s reverse the two pages and you have this sign, BOOK, when you open and close it. There are more signs - CLAP, HANDWAVE, FINISH. Any more?
Remember that this is a draft. The creative and scholastic enterprise of the Deaf Child mythology is still undergoing creation, revision, and expansion thanks to the vblog technology. The ultimate book jacket will be of brown leather, not reddish brown like here. The red flares will be removed to just the buff eyes onto the middle of two blue palms. Those of you who follow the DC myth, any suggestions?
awesome
any consideration to some symbology in the middle of the pupil?
one of my students made an intriguing sketch for a group artwork - in which she had an eye and the center pupil just repeated the eye imagery inward 3 times
just a thought - re: the bookcover being a full ASL representation without English texts - THANK YOU!
re: the flames / flares - could they still be incorporated somehow - somewhere in the work - i think they r very releveant and important. Stacy Lawrence, Deaf photographer, has an awesome series of Lauren Simms signing FIRE FIRE FIRE near the heart and going upward - for passion / activism
i think the flames imagery would be important for the book but perhaps the outer edges instead of the yellow border which boxes in the hands a bit or within the pupil
up to u - as is i think its an awesome draft
peace

Thank you for your suggestions. Flares are important, yes, but not mentioned in the myth yet, that is why. Symbols inside the pupils - excellent idea. ck

How creative! Although I am not much of an artist but good at interpreting it. I agree with Patti about keeping the flare/flames since it represents burning passion but the location should remain near the pupils that explains how Deaf people perceive the information visually!
Other signs? Wonderful, fabulous, outstanding…just like your draft!
