Justice For Tallie: Deaf Ex-Boyfriend Sentenced For Murder
MORGANTON - A local man was sentenced up to 33 years in prison for the kidnapping and second-degree murder of a Morganton woman four years ago.
Christopher Robert Lambert, 39, pleaded guilty to the 2004 kidnapping and murder of Tallie Antolin on Tuesday. Charged with first-degree murder, Lambert pleaded guilty to murder for a lesser charge, according to the Burke County Clerk of Court’s office. A Personal Letter From Tallie’s Family:
This was written be Steve Barden (Tallie’s Mother’s Husband) so Carol wouldn’t have to do it.
We walked in to the Courtroom 1, Superior Count in Morganton NC just before 2pm on May 27, 2008. We met briefly with the assistant DA and his assistant. Then we sat behind the jury box. Shortly after that the bailiffs brought in Chris Lambert. He was no longer the charismatic young man of a few years back. He has aged at least fifteen years. He has a potbelly and a receding hairline. He looks very old! The defense attorneys or his parents had supplied him with a nice shirt and a tie. He just sat there looking at the courtroom door. Just before the court session started Chris’s parents walked in and sat behind him. Chris had an interpreter that seemed very good and professional.
The District Attorneys and the Defense Attorneys spent about a half-hour confirming the details of the plea bargain that was agreed to the day before. After that, the Judge spent a fair amount of time confirming that Chris agreed to the plea with full knowledge and understanding. He indicated that he did.
Then the Assistant District Attorney started his summary of the state’s case. The highlights follow.
Chris called the police on a Saturday afternoon. Using the relay phone he indicated that he had killed someone. When the first officers arrived they smelled a strong odor coming from Tallie’s apartment. Chris opened the door and put his hands out in front of himself for the officers to put handcuffs on.
The first officers did a quick search of the apartment. They found a body on the back deck. It was wrapped in blankets with plastic trash bags over the upper torso. It was Tallie. The police sealed the crime scene and called the crime scene investigators.
Chris has bruises around his neck and cuts on his hands and legs. He claimed they were defensive wounds from Tallie attacking him. The DA said Chris tried to use a common telephone cord to try to hang himself. The cord broke and he fell and knocked over a lamp and broke the lamp bulb. That broken bulb is how he got the cuts on his hands and legs. There was a broken kitchen knife in the bathroom. There were indications that Chris also cut his hand when the knife broke.
The police found a note inside the apartment from a local drug dealer warning Chris to pay the $180.00 he owed. There is an ATM tape that shows Chris withdrawing $180.00 from Tallie’s account. Chris had claimed to investigators that both he and Tallie used drugs. The police interviewed the drug dealer that sold crack to Chris. The dealer stated that he didn’t know Tallie, never sold drugs to Tallie, didn’t even know who Tallie was.
Investigators found an email on Tallie’s Computer sent after her death from Chris that basically said “I’ve done something terrible and will be probably get a lethal injection”.
She was stabbed 27 times. Most of the stab wounds were on the front. The fatal wounds are believed to be from the neck and chest wounds. There were defensive wounds on Tallie’s hands. As the DA indicated, both Tallie and Chris were deaf. The ONLY way she could communicate with Chris was to be facing him. There are only a couple of wounds to the back of her head and neck. The DA thinks she finally tried to turn and run for a bedroom to put a door between herself and Chris. She didn’t make it.
There was confusion about the stab wounds. The body was so decomposed that the ME could not determine if some of the wounds were actually from the knife going all the way through the body and were just exit type wounds.
There were more details presented pointing to Chris’s guilt, which I won’t go into here. None of these details was disputed by the Defense. We are sure that if this had gone to trial, they would have been presented and it would had been heart wrenching for Tallie’s mother!
Carol gave her victim’s statement. The people behind me (unrelated to this court session) were even crying. Chris was nodding in agreement. (Please see her statement at the bottom of this document.)
Then the Defense Attorneys spoke mainly of mitigating circumstances regarding Chris. They basically conceded and admitted that Chris murdered Tallie. They found expert doctors that stated that Chris wasn’t in control of himself because of his crack addiction and diabetes. They indicated that because Chris’s blood sugar was very low on the Saturday of his arrest that this contributed to his killing Tallie the prior Tuesday night. They also produced a ten-page report documenting all the attempts to help Chris kick his drug habit. They also said that a lot of money was spent trying to get Chris off drug over the years.
The plea bargain consists of two parts: Chris plead guilty of murder in the second degree. For this he was sentenced to about 213 months in prison. Chris also plead guilty to kidnapping (By preventing Tallie from escaping) and was sentenced to about 100 months in prison. Both terms to be served one after the other. Chris is going to spend most of the next 28-30 years in a North Carolina prison.
We are basically satisfied with this sentence. While nothing will ever bring back Tallie, this sentence gets Chris out of our lives. He is going away for a long time. Hopefully he will disappear into the North Carolina Prison System and never hurt anyone else again. This is two hours the NO mother should ever have to go through.
This is Carol’s Victim Statement:
Tallie Antolin is my daughter.
I can’t believe it has taken 4 long years to get to this day. The reasonable part of me understands why it has taken so long. The mother in me wants to scream at everyone, “why has it taken over 4 years for justice to be served”.
The sentence handed down to Chris today I am told is reasonable and just. Over 4 years ago Tallie was sentence to death. For what! She had not committed a crime. Because of this sentence she will never be able to reach her goals or achieve her dreams.
4 years ago, this past mothers day I was sentenced to life. The rest of my life with out my daughter. Life without seeing her smiling face and dancing laughing eyes. No more holidays to share with her or special moments. No more daily e-mails or instant msg. from her, that always ending with smile I love you.
The rest of Tallie’s family was also sentenced to life. A life without Tallie being a part of our family to grow and share.
Over the last 4 years, everyone involved has been very helpful to me. They have listened to my concerns and answered my questions. They have been able to tell me how Tallie died and when Tallie died. But no one has been able to answer the question of why Tallie died.
Chris, Tallie was the only person that you could always go to and she was always there for you. Tallie always took you in and tried to help you. Over the years, Chris I have seen you take and take from Tallie, until you finally took her life.
Chris, why did you do it? Why did Tallie have to die?
Commentary: I interrupted my blogging hiatus to report this latest development as I’ve covered this story several times. Tallie’s mother and friends were gracious enough to correspond with me over the years. Not only were they open with me, they also permitted this story to be used as an educational piece on domestic violence in this blog. I felt their pain and I am glad this difficult saga with the judicial system had ended. Tallie finally got her justice. MZ

A 39 years sentence sounds good. Again his reputation is already serious damaged since the Deaf community is extremely small. Hopefully no parole for him. My heart goes out to Tallie’s family. I am starting to remember her at the cookout near my home a several years ago. She was a sweet woman. Never forget that I had worked with Chris for a several months. His poor absentee/tardiness was a big issue for him. I had to cover his shift. a few times. The boss let him go and he headed to the detox down the Cape — Stephan Miller place. That place is not longer existed because Chris and the other person sued and won the $$. Chris spend it all! Shame on him .. He would have gone and get some help but he didn’t. He wastes his talented and intelligent, many more. He excels on political stuffs. What a waste.
June 4th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
FYI Diane its not 39 years.. Chris is 39 years old now. He will be in jail for around 33 years.. Yes WITHOUT parole. Yes I agree with you Chris is very talented and intelligent guy too bad he wasted it on drugs and now in jail.
June 4th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I remember them both from Gallaudet. I remember Chris always ask for money. He always have looked awful. I did not know him that well that time. Glad justice is finally served.
June 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Anyone have a picture of Lambert? The only one I have seen is from his MSSD days.
June 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Curious Yes I do have picture of Chris lambert with Tallie antolin and 2 dogs from Xmas.. Maybe if Mishka Zena want to post it she can contact me she knows how to reach me.

It’s hard for me to read and hear about how Chris was a bad person and how Tallie was a hopeless victim.
Tallie and Chris were together for a long time. A friend of mine actually saw them when they were in the hospital. When she told them that they have to do something about Chris’s addiction to drugs, they both laughed at her, especially Tallie. Tallie knew about Chris’s drug problem for a long time. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s also a drug addict, but there was no evidence to indicate she was though.
The point is, Tallie ignored our pleas, our suggestions, our encouragements to leave Chris.
She’s 100% victim? I think not.

Hi…welcome back, I missed you, Jodi
June 4th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
SYU
That’s mean you are laughing at Tallie too? It is a Domestic violence .. nothing with the drug issues. (can be applied but.. ) Yes CL has a long history of drug problem. Tallie? I think not. Tallie is 110 percent victim because she was MURDERED by Chris. She doesn’t deserve to be murdered. Tallie tried to escape but stuck which is called a woman batter syndrome. Tallie was manipulated and controlled by CL. No one included us know their dark side. Anyone agree? RIP Tallie .. Justice for Tallie finally! I hope CL rots in hell. I know him as I had worked with him a several months in Boston.
June 4th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
SYU Tallie will always be victim anyone who is involves in Domestic violence are victim. Its often hard for someone to break the cycle who is involves in domestic violence relationship hard to leave often they got end up trapped or stuck. There are so much involves in domestic violence. Its hard to help someone to leave a domestic violence situation. The person who is involves in it need to be the one who is strong enough to end it. All we can do is to provide support and encourage them to leave. There is statistic shows that it will take several times for someone really end the relationship and really leave for good. Sometimes it end up too late. Anyone who experience domestic violence will always be victim no matter what we do to help end it.
June 4th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
He deserved it.
It’s good to see your blog again! Missed you!
June 4th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Hi,
Good to see this blog.. Justice is served finally but not going to bring back Tallie. NCSD employees won’t even discuss this issue because it hurts them so much. Kids at NCSD miss Tallie so much. I have counseled one kid and she brings up Tallie every now and then with such sadness.
Domestic Abuse: Laughing matter it is NOT! I have seen so many damages by Domestic Abuse. I have seen one of my closest friend losing the only sister in law she had and her brother due to this. It has caused her pain every day. Her niece and nephews saw alot of abused and they are still haunted by the small minded Deaf community because they remind them of how awful the father was and all. It just pisses me off when people say they laughed.. I bet inside you’re pertified to face the truth…
I just had to commit a guy into psychiatrist care because he was treatening my case manager and others around him. Drugs or Mentally Ill is no excuse to abuse anyone.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
that is a guy who was threatening my case manager and others around him sorry for the typo.
June 5th, 2008 at 2:09 am
Yes, I remember Chris was 19-20 years old at MSSD. Bright but peculiar but who’s not. Smoked lots of cigarettes and probably more away from notoriously prying eyes at MSSD that time. Sadly, many eminent deaf people who graduated from MSSD (especially 1989) treated him as second class outside situations that doesn’t benefit them (anything not intellectual) and maybe a bit of recreational drugs on the side). This situation is similar to the famous basketball player Wilt Chamberlain being treated as first class on the court but just as second class off the court. It drove Wilt away from Kansas University into the professional ranks but he licked his wounds in his own ways–sex, sex and sex and some more. Many, especially non-ASL, who were used by the deaf community end up so driven by drugs for reasons including offsetting double standardized prejudices thrown their way in the past. I remember one girl who was Oral and new to MSSD she was pursued by anti-Oral types who just wanted sex.

I knew Chris and Tallie from their Boston days. I agree completely that Tallie bears no responsiblity for this tragic outcome to a short and sweet life. She was in love with Chris, for better or worse and because of her suffering what appears to be Battered Woman Syndrome, she was unable to permanently end this destructive relationship. Chris has always been a bright and intuitive person who has also suffered from long term drug addiction. He had tried to get sober from my understanding many times, but was unable to maintain any long term sobriety. His addictions were made worse by his type 1 diabetes. As anyone who has been addicted to drugs or close to an addict knows, when using, it is almost impossible to attend to any other health issues. One obsession, drugs, blots out all other concerns.
I worked with Chris over the years and was often struck by the Jeckel Hyde nature of his character. Ambitious, bright, well educated, his demons took him on a very tragic and violent path. He was known to have problems keeping jobs, when he did work, he often had bad record of absenteeism and poor performance. He used poor judgement from time to time in circulating negative stories about those he claimed to be friends with. And yet still Tallie held him in high regard. It is so painful to think that she is no longer with us.
It is true that Chris sued Stephan Miller House (and won) many years ago if i remember correctly, for lack of access to services due to what was decided a poor record of providing interpreters and other accomodations needed for a person that uses American Sign Language as their primary means of communication. While it was at the time viewed positively in the Deaf Community that someone had spoken up for the rights of access of Deaf people to substance abuse services, it all came to sad ending. Chris frittered the money away on a fancy car and also what seems to be a refueling of his cocaine habit. If i am correct i believe his suit effectively ended SMH services to Deaf addicts and alchholics who were trying to improve their lives. Now in Mass. we have LESS SERVICES for Deaf people trying to get sober than we did back in the 1980s and early 1990s…
I am not sure why there was a plea bargain, other than to save the state the cost of a trial but I do beleive in the end justice has been served. Chris will be nearly 70 years old when he is released from prison, and hopefully he will have found sobriety.
My heart bleeds for Tallie’s family. The stain of a murdered child is permanent on the souls and I can only imagine how hard it is to live day to day for her survivors. May God bless her soul…
June 5th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Hand- You asking why there is plea bargain, I have spoke with friend sometimes people will go ahead with plea bargain to reduce their time in jail. Also, sometime lawyer feel its better to plea bargain if there are too strong evidence against that person and possible of losing in the trial. So there are several possibility reason why it end up plea bargain but I do not know what reason Chris pick plea Bargain. But your right he will be about 70 years old by time he get out only if he survived in jail for that long. And what will his life will be like after he is out of jail at age 70 ?
June 5th, 2008 at 9:39 am
I remember both of them from Gallaudet and that they used to roommate with one of my good dear friend off campus. I remember how Tallie was when Chris wasn’t around that she was always smiling then when Chris is around that she was sad and that they would always argue. Another friend of mine that I grew up with had told me about Chris that he had ripped him off in purchasing his used van and wrote him a fake check for the used van. I think Chris is nothing, but snake! He deserve to be locked up for as long as he live…he is nothing, but a bad news that I have always known of and heard of!
June 5th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Handmaiden — I agree with you. I am from here in Boston area. He is finished — sitting in jail until he gets out at 70 (if he is alive). Still hard to believe because I literally worked with him for a few months. He is very intelligent and a great sense of humor. I had never knew his dark side. I remember one of the hearing overnight staffs mentioned we should be a perfect couple. I scoffed.
June 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am
my husband is a diabete insulin dependent like Chris. I discussed this with him before about this case and if he went to jail what he think would happen to him. He told me flat out dead within few days. Because he knew that prisoners don’t get fair treatment for medical issues.
So I believe Chris has survived this long in jail but when he is in prison. How much time does he have to live? Not much. So he is getting a death penalty in a different way.
June 5th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I have known both Chris and Tallie for many years. I am saddened by Tallie’s death, she did not deserve this as she was a victim of Chris’ abuse. Chris was intelligent and knew how to manipulate Tallie, I have seen this with my own eyes and I have experience seeing Chris’ dark side.
I am glad he is in prison until he is 70 years old because I will never feel safe around him again even if he moves back to Massachusetts, I would want a cop to watch him 24 hours as he can flip out. Never know what he is thinking.
He used to do drugs while at work in the bathroom getting high, getting fired from many jobs because of his drug addiction. He has to accept his responsibility and accept the fact that he took away Tallie’s life for no reason. Being on drugs does not excuse Chris’ behavior.
May god bless Tallie’s soul and may god find forgiveness in Chris’ soul.
June 5th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I have known chris and only met tallie once. we went AA-step meetings together in 1997. I found chris very intelligent and honest about his addiction. i was new at that time, i learned so much about addiction and recovery through his sharing with experience of drug use. he then disappeared when he relapsed. saw him once a while over years and saw his disease of addiction progressively. as i myself struggle with addiction and recovery, know it is very hard to stay sober with working on long suffering unsolved issues. i also know how active addiction leads us to dangerous situations. i went to some point that i want to kill someone and kill myself. ADDICTION WANTS TO KILL. but when we become sober and in recovery, we are responsible for staying clean and stay safe. chris made a bad decision and chose to stay active with his addiction and he is paying for his consquences. yes he is responsible for tallie’s death. god help tallie’s family who is suffering from this senseless horrible tragedy. i work for sexual assault and domestic violence program and i learned that we stay with our partners in hopes that we could change them because we are so blind in love. I truly believe if tallie went to ALANON- 12 step meetings that helps people whose partners, families are suffering from alcoholism and drugs- she would have left him long time ago. my heart goes to you tallie and family also my heart goes to chris, may you both find peace and forgivness in your heart.

I knew Tallie in Gallaudet and I also knew Chris. Tallie was my friend and had a BIG heart for everyone and listened to everyone. Women like her are so rare. What I learned from her murder is that ILLEGAL DRUGS KILL. We need to learn to teach our children its never okay to take mind altering drugs that kill your mind, body and soul. Protect future children deaf or hearing from drug use. Teach them theres more to life than drugs and partying irresponsibly. I miss you Tallie and now I know you are with Amy in heaven now! Sincerely, John Schumacher, Class of 2006

Welcome back, MZ! It’s good to see you commenting again!!
My heart goes out to the family of the young woman,..whose life was taken from her. My heart also goes out to those who have to face the societal consequences of the evil that is young man did!!
As to the sad story of this young murdered woman and this young man,..when the frustrations, which are forced on one by life,..build up and build up to the point that there seems no solution to those frustrations,..then a person will turn to drugs and despair.
What folks should be examining and most likely ARE examining are what caused the frustrations, which built up in this young man in the first place and how his frustration, which led to the death of this young woman,..could have been avoided in the first place.
Young folks must be taught that there is more to life than running away from life through drugs, booze, and sex!! Drugs aside,..it is the misuse of some of the good things in life that leads to frustration and situations like this!!
My only answer is to teach one’s children that there are more things in life that the instant gratification of a momentary pleasure!! And for some folks,..that is one hard lesson to learn!!
….Stanelle

This was sent to my mailbox several days ago, MZ:
Hi, My name is Daishun. I tried to post in your blog about Tallie Antolin but it wouldn’t let me post comment about it. I had received an update about Chris Lambert, the person who murdered her, that he is going to spend 33 years in jail. He is not going to spend life in jail or facing death penalty. He plead guilty for lesser charge so it gives him an easy way out by spending 33 years in jail. Question is: Will that give Tallie finally rest in peace or not. I am sure that would outrage the deaf community out there that he should stay in jail so he wouldn’t hurt other people. I wanted to see what really in the mind of deaf community think about the result. Here is the link that you can read maybe you can understand the court system and try to understand why they gave him lesser charge for only kidnapping and murder. What do you think of it? I would love to see if you add anything in the new blog. Keep on posting!
Tallie was an very good friend of mine and she was an friend to many others in the deaf community in New Hampshire. Even in school in Manchester, NH, teachers knew her very well. When I heard this sad news on the day of her death, I cried all day and it really broke my heart. I was hoping that justice is served that he stays in jail or stay in death row. But with him coming out in 33 years later, I don’t feel right for him to come out of jail and being out in general population. I am sure this new result coming from the court this going to upset many deaf people out there.

In my opinion, I doubt Chris will come out alive because he is diabetic. The medical treatment in prison is terrible. At least he is locked up for a looong time. This is not a happy ending for both families and all of us. RIP Tallie — even I only saw her once or twice.

you are absolutely right. yes definitely they are based on anonymoity. i should have not used his name but this is where i met him! i felt it was important to share about 12 steps recovery and that people do recover when sober. also important to share when people are active with addiction and that is what happens. thank you for your reminder
by the way my name is spelled sheri

I’m truely sorry to hear of tallie’s death as I do not know her or Chris.
Iam from Austraila, my heart out to Tallie’s mum and family, I will pray for you and your families.
Love from Sky
