Deaf Children of Canada Needs Your Help!!
In Ontario, there will be over 1,000 Deaf people rallying against the
mandates that Canadian government intend to impose that will forbid Deaf
children with cochlear implants to learn ASL.
We can help them by showing our support against the mandates at the
Canadian Embassy on 501 Pennsylvania Ave near Union Station this Friday
at 9:30am for only one hour.
Gallaudet’s graduation ceremony begins at 1pm so we have plenty of time
to show our support then return to celebrate with our graduating seniors
and other scholars.
If Canadian government does this then it may be the precedent for other
countries and states to follow. Clearly, this act of language genocide
cannot be tolerated and is dangerous beyond comprehension.

Commentary: I’m posting this for a friend. Over 1,000 is expected to participate in the protest at Canada? If so, that will be a very impressive turn out. I guess countless letters of objections raised by its concerned citizens aren’t sufficient to convince the government to see the light about the issues raised by its extremely short-sighted and dictatorial policy.Â
Since when is it ok for the government to interfere with the parents’ rights to raise their children as they see fit? What if the children aren’t able to benefit fully from C.I.s alone and the parents want to supplement with sign language?  The practice of govermental powers overriding the rights of the parents isn’t unusual in a communist country, but this is happening in Canada, a democratic country.  This disquieting precedent can easily spread to other countries, removing the rights of the parents to determine the communication needs of their C.I.-using deaf children.  Â
In a response to a reader, I’ve added more information. The ban against ASL among deaf children using C.I. by the Dept of Ministry is noted on the top part of page two in this report, “Accessibility for Ontario With Disabilities Act, 2004 to the Standing Committee on Social Policy with Respect to Bill 118″ http://www.chs.ca/pdf/Bill_118_Submission.pdf

This movie is now rapidly circulating in YouTube, put there by people outraged at the effords of this fundamental religious group to indoctrinate its impressive young kids. Not only is it sparking a great controversy here in America, but also in Pakistan as none wants to see innocent children possibly being used as walking killing machnes.
Disney is infamous for going after people who uses its trademark names illegally with a vengeance. Not even children are immune from Disney’s wrath. This brings up a question. Will we be seeing Disney suing this radical group for infringement of copyright laws?

Sigh…I would be there if I could, to show my support.
Especially coming from a person with CI - that ought to send them a message!
I hope there will be also CI folks showing their support in the protest.
It would help a lot if parents of CI children who use ASL be there and send them a message.

Joseph, The Dept of Ministry is driving this. National Health Services provide implementation of cochlear implants at no charge, with the understanding that the parents promise to adhere strictly to AVT. Ontario is a province, not a country. It is similar to a state (Michigan, Maryland, Montana, Mississipi, etc) in the United States. FYI, there are ten provinces AND 3 territories in Canada. OK, enough of Geography for now…
In Canada, education is controlled on a provincial, not national level. It can be either the Department (or Ministry) of Education doing the job. In contrast, the US government, not state governments, controls education. Hope I am right about the US??
The Deaf community in Ontario is raising a big uproar against the Ontario government/ Ontario Ministry of Education’s decision to prevent children with CI from learning/ using ASL. Just AVT (audio-visual training). Yep, right, no sign language allowed for CI children.
To be honest, I don’t think the protest against the Canadian embassy would work?? Maybe try to set up a protest in Toronto??

I’m organizing the rally at Parliament Hill in Ottawa tomorrow, while there’ll be another one in Toronto. This is province-wide, not country-wide.

Hi there
Yes Ontario Association of the Deaf and its allies are targeting Ontario government for not interfering AVT groups which have forced parents to pick one program ASL or AVT. There is no question about AVT groups that are very radical extremists that must be stopped immediately. We want Ontario government to interfere AVT groups and force AVT groups to accept CI children with ASL programs.
Ontario government has not set up regulations since the language of instruction becoming law in 1993. The Ontario government is very irresponsible for not doing its job to enhance Deaf education.
There are many other issues that must be addressed immedaitely or many Deaf children will face a huge problem in the future and Ontario government may face a very serious wraith of Deaf community and parents.
Across Canada, Canadian Association of the Deaf and many other Deaf organizations are pushing many provincial governments to improve Deaf education in all provinces. We have to work together to lobby all provincial governments to stop practise their audist and unfair policies for Deaf children and community as well as parents of deaf children.
Education is provincial responsibility. Federal government has nothing to do with it but Federal government can only provide resources nothing more nothing less. I think US government and state governments are sharing Education responsibility.
Canadians need your help. If no help, it will make a huge backfire on Deaf education in USA. Please show up at the Canadian Embassy and USA government will see it. The Canadian Embassy is the only one embassy that is within US Capitol area. I am sure it will make a big difference for Deaf Education. It will be “Win Win situation” for Deaf Canadians and Deaf Americans!

Anytime we limit communication choices, there’s going to be kids who fall through the cracks in the system. I’m appalled at this attempt to limit communication access to deaf children.

that doctors rake millions from pharmaceutial companies to prescribe unsafe anemia drugs for their outpatients. The same can be said about
doctors who reap millions from cochlear implant companies to convince parents to implant deaf children. CI companies even put implantées on their payroll for acting as “live advertisers” in
conferences, conventions, workshops, and the like
for demostration.

You have to stand up for your deaf right! Don’t let people scare you! Be brave and fight for you and other deaf Canadian children! The American deaf people supports Canadian deaf people. ASL is very beautiful signning and don’t throw ASL away! I wish I will be there in Canada to join the protest! Mississippi School for the Deaf is proud of Canadian deaf people stand up for YOUR RIGHTS!

Deaf children with cochlear implants..not allowed to learn ASL? When you turn off the implant,..isn’t the child still…deaf? (That was a rhetorical question.)
What happens to the kids’ residential hearing after they are CI implanted? One of my old students,..now in her mid-twenties,..CI implanted,..says that she uses the American Sign Language she learned in my classes as a means of communicating with her mother and family,..sound..(or the CI version of sound that her brain produces for her from her implant)…”just ISN’t “cutting it”…i.e..working for her.
Being able to “hear” sound DOESN’T mean that you will be able to instantly understand spoken language…or use spoken language. Learning ASL has nothing to do with that! I’ve been repeating this for almost thirty years!!

One of my former “retarded” students now designs computer parts and writes new computer programs…I guess that he was not as “retarded” as he was labeled to be!!
