School’s New President Hasn’t Been Waiting on Ceremony
For a month after Robert Davila was named president of Gallaudet University in December, he didn’t leave campus. There was too much to do. He was taking on a school that spent much of the fall in chaos, shut down by protesters for days, venomously divided over the presidency. A federal agency had criticized the school for the deaf, and its accreditation was at risk.
Davila was 74 years old, with a grandfather’s warm smile and funny stories, but instead of retiring, he was launching into the toughest job of his life.
The clock is ticking on accreditation, he said recently. “We have to do it, because, long term, the impact on the university is most serious. The consequences are too frightening to ignore.”

75% BoT Alumni Request:  The Board of Gallaudet University Alumni Association  expressed the desire to increase of the number of alumni on the Gallaudet Board of Trustees to at least seventy-five percent of elected members http://alumni.gallaudet.edu/?ID=11042

Board of Trustees: They will conduct meetings this Thursday and Friday.Â
Commentary:  The most tumultuous year in Gallaudet history is coming to an end. We may have broken the record for the longest student protest in this country. Gallaudet apparently has the dubious distinction of being the only university ejecting one president and an appointed president selected by its BoT.
Will the BoT make the announcement of the seven BoT appointees this week?  It was the failure of BoT to heed the wishes of Gallaudet University that set the stage for two major protests. With the accreditation in serious jeopardy from years of academic neglect by the previous administration and MSCHE’s ominous warning that Gallaudet cannot afford another protest, it is even more imperative that BoT appoint people who really have Gallaudet’s best interests in heart. MZ

On GUAA meeting on April 20, they approved 8 different items and one of them is…
“GUAA will purchase a $500 brick for the James Lee Sorenson Language and Communication building.”

What??? This is not right for GUAA do this, knowing how upset many alumni feel for SLCC. What they do? Ignore us?
If you don’t like GUAA’s actions, contact them. After all, GUAA works for all of us, the alumni.

Perhaps GUAA feels it is more productive to start healing by offering $500 for SLCC brick as a gesture of goodwill.
I just finished watching the installation ceremony. What a beautifu procession. I am glad the technology permits all of us, who are unable to attend the ceremony in person, to watch the ceremony on the Internet.
I never knew Davila had so many “first Deaf” positions. His perservance and ambition to this day are very admirable. It seems everybody feels Weiner is an excellent choice, just like many do with Davila as the President. As a team, Davila and Weiner have what it takes to motivate others to work together toward a common goal: getting Gallaudet back on its feet with its beacon shining brightly all over the world.

Hi Elizabeth,
I watched the installation program for Dr.Davila yesterday, one thing Eleanor Norton said that she was the daughter of a honorary degree person, did she have a family member that worked at Gallaudet like her mother or father? If so, do you know what their name was and what they did. I never knew about it and I am not sure if I understood it right or not so am turning to you to see if you know anything about it.
