Ex-Girlfriend Says Wright Seemed Nervous

The woman at the center of the suspected motive in Daphne Wright’s murder case says Wright seemed nervous after the victim disappeared.

Prosecutors say Wright killed Darlene VanderGiesen because she thought VanderGiesen was trying to destroy her relationsip with Sallie Collins.

Collins and Wright dated for almost five years. But Collins testified that the relationship wasn’t working, so four months before VanderGiesen died, she broke up with Wright. The woman testified she still spent time with Wright, and was with her a lot following VanderGiesen’s disappearance.

Collins says she had no contact with her ex-girlfriend Daphne Wright on the day Darlene VanderGiesen disappeared. She testified that the next day she got an email from Wright asking if she could spend the weekend with Collins.

But the next night, when Collins drove to Wright’s house to pick her up, she wasn’t there. That was February 3rd, 2006, the day prosecutors believe Wright chopped up VanderGiesen’s body with a chainsaw and disposed of the parts.

Wright’s roommate, Jacki Chesmore, testified that Wright was cleaning up in the basement that day. She left at 6pm, telling Chesmore she was taking the rotten carpet to the Dumpster. Wright didn’t return until after 10 pm.

Collins and Wright then met up. Collins says Wright seemed nervous when told VanderGiesen was missing. She says the nervousness continued throughout the weekend.

“Daphne was nervous,” Collins said on the stand. “She was smoking every minute I told her to calm down and take it easy. ‘What was wrong?’ And she’d say, ‘Nothing, nothing.’ And I was a little bit puzzled.”

Collins also testified about an earlier dispute between VanderGiesen and Wright. VanderGiesen was playing cards at Collins’s apartment when Wright showed up.

She says Wright got mad and asked VanderGiesen, “Why are you trying to destroy our relationship?”

VanderGiesen stuck her middle finger at Wright while leaving, Collins testified.

Collins eventually had to call the police to get Wright to leave. She says Wright said, “You will be very sorry.”

In cross-examination, Wright’s lawyers pointed out that Collins might not have been truthful about completely ending her relationship with Wright.

When the defense cross-examined Jacki Chesmore, we learned that Chesmore doesn’t like Collins. Those three women all used to live together, and Wright’s lawyers asked questions about Collins’ temper — Implying that she could be capable of murder.

ah! this is interesting that a lawyer saying collins’ temper can be leaded to murder someone? I dont know sallie very well. Daphne is the most meanest and abuse person I know. hmm…

  2. Mishka Zena Says:

Hedy, the job of Wright’s lawyer is to put doubt in prosecutor witness’s credibility. They’ll do anything to weaken the prosecutor’s case while trying to make Daphne look innocent.

At first they tried to implicate that one of Darlene’s boyfriend may have killed Darlene. Now they are doing the same thing with Collin. What will they do next?

  3. SChevy Says:

well, it is very common for a murderer to be described as a saint. Wright’s profile surely fits as a murderer but can’t judge a book by its cover.
Very common statements from the neighbors or relatives describing the murderers, “We were shocked that he is a murderer because he seemed to be a very nice and shy person….”
Since Wright continues denying the murder, I think she should be given more time being observed by deaf psycharists, not the hearing ones with interpreters.

Anybody know who’s interpreting for the trial? Do they have certified legal interpreters?

OMG. Wright bought the chainsaw and others to get rid of the body which showed her insanity,
She had a very bad blow to her head while ago that her mind may be blanked out doing the evil thing, then got stuck with the body.
IMO, I believe that she should be in the insitute for mentally sick criminals for life without parole so that many deaf psychologists may at least benefit from the study on her insanity.
She must be terribly scared to be alone for she is not a good looking person who can’t hear the music or at least can enjoy chatting in some places such as bars.Still, what a monsterous maniac!
