From a Frustrated Teacher: OSD

What the hell NAD doing about OSD problem? Wonder if jamie tucker the
leader of CAESD is doing anything to help american schools for the deaf
with problems from their state education officials like OSD that lost
Jane Mulholland last friday. Mebbe CAESD and NAD will act fast when
tucker and klopping get dismissed like 55 years old mulholland cuz state
department of education superintendents want to lead deaf schools in
different direction. It is not funny reading about deaf school problems
in papers and see nothing from our deaf leaders.
Show some courage; speak up and make your voices heard. Teachers,
alumni, students, parents of deaf schools need your help now. Pls do not
wait until our school problems get out of control before you write nice
letters. We do not want your nice coffins when we are dead with
frustrations and sadness. Pls wake up now not later and do not leave us
to suffer alone.

Commentary: This writer brings up valid questions. From what I’ve been reading about OSD and its concerned stakeholders at the blog, Deaf Schools United (http://blog.deafread.com/dsammy) and through private e mails from friends in Oregon, this firing of the OSD director seems very odd. According to everybody, she has been an exceptional director who is deeply committed to deaf students and their education. So far, their Department of Education officials failed to respond satisficatory to questions of  stakeholders distressed by this unexpected firing. elizabeth

Ouch - that’s true.
I’m not a leader, nor do I know any.
Who are the deaf leaders?
I’d email them and encourage them?

I feel for this frustrated OSD teacher. I blogged about the identical situation whereas I asked are our organizations and schools leaving Idaho Deaf school to be closed in the near-future if they don’t act. My post can be found here - http://sonnyjames.blogspot.com/2007/01/leaving-idaho-deaf-school-to-be-closed.html

I do understand how they feel. I feel that NAD and CEASD needs to do more for the education aspect in Deaf Schools. I think Deaf leaders in schools are tired of fighting without any help from Organizations like NAD and CEASD.

I agree with you that it seems odd. Is it a conspiracy if you have read Lennard’s article and watched Carl Schroeder’s videoblog “Not Hearing Enough: A New Trend” (visit http://carl-schroeder.blogspot.com/2007/01/not-hearing-enough-new-trend.html . Carl drew an excellent parallel between Lennard and Shirley Schultz Meyers.
It looks like the 1880 Milan is repeating its history — forbidding the use of sign language in the classroom.
Has the NAD rolled up its sleeves? I have not seen it in black and white as of yet.
Would anyone out there know who presides the Oregon Association of the Deaf (OAD)?

Sonny, I just checked your post and it is an excellent one. I wonder the same thing, too. The next post Oppression and Passivity, written by Chris Heuer, explains the apathy syndrome. It’s lengthy, but is very informative.
Jean, I’ve not read that article yet, but definitely plan to. It has riled many people already!
I’ve contacted NAD and CEASD and requested that they take action about the OSD situation. Here are their e mail contact information:
National Association of the Deaf contact information:
Email Address: deborah.jacobs@nad.org
CEASD: NationalOffice@ceasd.org
Maybe if we all send emails to them, they will respond to our pressure and spring into action. Please do your part. I will send them e mails again amd ask them to check the Idaho SD, too, after reading Sonny’s post. Thanks

the leaders of OSD resistance are alrady known. You can read and see who are named in emails at my blog.
George Scheler, alumni, current chair of OAD’s Legislative committee
Dot Johnson, deaf, retired TexasSD, but OSD alumni and past president, OAD
Robyn Brown, parent of 3 deaf, was teacher at OSD
Ron Abbott, parent of a deaf child
to name a few.
Mr. (NOT Dr.) Ed Dennis is one hell of a stubborn Know-Nothing superintendent.

Mr. Dennis says in his response to Nancy Rarus’s email posted on GallyNet-L that the decision is final.
He reminds me of Tom
Humphries who said
“Stalemate” in response to protesters.
We can change the decision if we act the way the protesters acted.

David–I’m not disagreeing with your comment, but I find it ironic that you’re calling Dennis a stubborn, know-nothing person while there are people, including bloggers and leaders of the protest, that are not considering, nor even entertaining, the possibility that Dennis may have had a reason to fire Jane.
