Bahl Video

[kml_flashembed movie="http://www.deafread.com/media/doug_bahl/dougbahl1.swf" width="500" height="400"/]Hello my name is Doug Bahl. Many of you in the deaf community throughout the nation have gotten word of my arrest and the fact that I did not have TTY or interpreter access during my four days in jail. It was a terribly frustrating ordeal. Many of you have contacted me with support and great concern for my well being. Many have seen pictures of my injuries. Because of the legal process, this is not something I am able to talk about now but I want to assure you that I appreciate your concerns. While I have not had a court appearance yet. I ask for your patience and assure you that I will give you information at a later date when I am able. I am contacting you now so that you can see I am okay now and to say thank you for all of your concerned messages and support. Love to all.

(Doug Bahl sent me a vlog for the concerned readers, but I couldn’t download it in my blog and the video quality is too low for YouTube. So Tayler has graciously offered to host it at DeafRead so the readers can see Doug Bahl’s vlog. Thanks so much for your help, Tayler. :))

Update: This video has been uploaded at You Tube now where the screen is bigger. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNVG2CsMcsE

There is an active discussion on Bahl’s case at a Minn website at: http://www.mnspeak.com/mnspeak/archive/post-2551.cfm

The only strong evidence of the police’s wrongful action was Doug was not provided an interpreter for as long as 4 days and he even was not allowed to have one telephone call. I agree fully that he has the right to sue the police for a large amount of money even if he acted wrongful in the first place. I do not know why the police assaulted him out of the blue.
By the way, I understand why Carl Duncan was assaulted. He kicked at the policewoman’s stomach that she was hospitalized.

  2. Mathew Molinder Says:

doug, you might not remember me i was student tvi in minn at 1976 dont give up thanks mathew

  3. Mishka Zena Says:

Duncan? Do you mean Dupree? Dupree did kick the policewoman’s stomach, but I was under the impression it was done during the struggle, with security guards already holding him.

However, whatever happened, an illegal chokehold shouldn’t have been used. It was outlawed because this method killed too many people, just like it did with Dupree. Had they used a legal restraint, he would be still alive and if he did violate any law, he would have been tried at the court. But he received an automatic death sentence due to an illegal chokehold.

Doug, hang in there! as you said, you DO have a lot of people rooting for you. I just simply CANT imagine the police doing that to you!!!!! Please as you say keep us all posted with whatever information you are able to share asap. this will be an important case.

  6. Sherry Says:

    Hello, Doug Bahl

I’d be appreciated for your info about your experience by the cops. We need to support for our deaf community in the states.
Really scarefully! I can’t image if what the cops could be doing to me whenever I am a deaf woman with a pacermaker. Pray for you and all the deaf community, too.

  7. Tomas Hedberg Says:

    Doug,

The event with you has reached me through my friend Gunilla. I was shocked by seeing your assaulted face. I simply CAN’T imagine why the police did with you for only a simply breach: Don’t Walk across the street. That police seems to have no tolerance! Moreover you had to sit in jail in 4 DAYS. Too long time without access with interpreter service! The police and the police authority has to get kicked due to breach of duty.
Here in Sweden your friends are concerned. You have our support.

  8. IamMine Says:

    Wow, Doug!

You are a strong man for hanging in there in ONE piece after all you’ve gone through!

This also shows how strong we Deaf are despite the frustrations/hardships we face when trying to get access we have every right to!

This is a very important lesson to teach the police!

There was a horrible event here in Detroit with police and a deaf man who got shot because he held up the rake in the air when police yelled “put it down!!” and when he didn’t, he got shot and killed (even when neighbors yelled at the police that he was DEAF!).

    :(

    It was awful.

Glad you are “OK” otherwise, Doug!

    xo
    Iam

  9. Mishka Zena Says:

Kudos to Bahl for getting lawyers. Nobody should have gone through what he did. I felt so bad, seeing the pictures, then the vlog. I am glad he is physically ok, with the support of family and friends.

  10. Jason Says:

Doug has agreed to do an interview with WCCO-TV. We’re speaking tonight, and it should be on our news at ten this evening (Wednesday December 6).

  11. Tom Willard Says:

I don’t understand why he says he can’t talk about it because of the “legal process” and why everyone accepts this without question. If he is in the right, it should make no difference whatsoever if he tells his story now. It seems as if the lawyers have to coach him on how to tell his story or something.

  12. Mishka Zena Says:

Tom, when I talked to the reporters live about my civil rights lawsuit against Laurel Regional Hospital, the lawyers were with me, too. It is a standard procedure, by the way.

  13. Jason Says:

I hate to report this, but because of another story, my interview with Doug won’t be airing tonight at ten. I’ll update when I know more.

  14. Dorothy & Duane Says:

    Hi Doug;
When we first recieved the email with pictures of you we thought it was some kind of a joke! But no, it was not a joke and we feel really bad that you had to experience this from our law enforcement people here in Minnesota. We are just thankful that you are okay now and hopefully your lawyer gets the proper compensation that is due to you in this unfortunate ordeal. Take care and know we are behind you all the way!

  15. Richard Says:

    Doug

Good luck to win against these police officers! May God be with you!

  16. KE Says:

Hi Doug, I feel so bad for what I saw the pictures of you and you have gone thru which were not necessary. but I am glad you are doing ok now.I hope you deserve to win the case against the brutality and Audism of these police officers. You are in our thoughts and prayers. :) we love you . Kathy Hughes

  17. S says. Says:

I heard the rumor about you . That is awful to hear that. It is not very nice about the cop who brutality on you for little thing.. cop should have to gave you ticket period instead of threat on you. Today world people who are Antichrist around here.. That cop who brutality you , he had no mortal feeling he is full of evil in his heart.
O Buck are same way no heart it is hard heart… i know some of cop are good and bad so people have to be aware of it and hard to trust.. ” Good cop will be very difficult” why because of bad cop cause.
I hope Cheif cop fired him who brutality on you. it is very embrass on cop what kind they are.

  18. Jason Says:

Tonight (Thursday) is the night. The story will be posted on my blog after it airs at ten, on WCCO-TV in Minneapolis.

  19. Beatrice Sachs Pfaff Says:

Doug, What a shock to see your face like that!, I know we the Deaf community now watching you and want to make sure that the law will give you Deaf civil right. Please do let us know update and we will do something if things are not doing legally or equally. We are with you !

  21. Gloria Jochims Says:

Remember me as I graduated with you at MSD in ‘69. Glad you turned out good physical health but I know what cops did WRONG to you. I do understand that possible cops doubt you are really deaf. Some hearing people can be act as deaf. It happened to my roommate, Ricardo of Puerto Rico looks alike ARAB person. One time he looked exactly as SADDAM of IRAQ few years ago people stared at him. Cops stopped him for NO REASONS here in WA. He passed to show cards of ASL interpretors which he used to be asst. teacher of ASL plus service for deaf community. They let him go then next day we both went to the police dept. to discuss about the issue why cops stopped him for NO REASONS then I handled my driver license to check on computer to see if there has a record shown that I am deaf. I took driving testing which I moved here, WA from Minn. It doesn’t show records on computer. I would recommend that we should have small box “picture” of ear with SLASH on driver licenses that shows for PROOF so cops would see and know we are truly DEAF that way it would help them to understand. Here in WA law require for cops to carry pads/pens “notes” to write to deaf people. Suggest to your lawyer to investiage what law of Minn. has for cops and deaf people to deal.
    Good LUCK!… Take care!. Gloria

  22. MyASL Says:

Oh my… I heard about this from my ASL teacher. We are just absolutely appauld. This is ridiculous. I do not know you personally but being apart of my ASL program in school and hearing about you from my teacher i do not beilieve you would hit or bite anyone out of nowhere. Its kind of odd. Im not sure what that police officer was thinking. And not to have an interpreter in jail is just absolutely ridiculous and there is no reason for this type of actions in the state of Minnesota, it just makes our state look bad. There was no reason at all to beat you in any way shape or form. This is just preposterous. I wish you good luck in court.

  23. Us Says:

We are with you. You are in our hearts and prayers.

  24. A fellow Deaf Suffer Says:

I was arrested once, had no interpreter, and refused a tty call. was in jail for 10+ hours whereas the judge threw out the charges on “ridicilous probabe cause” but the lawyers wouldn’t go after the police. Quite a town, isn’t it?

A deaf man- no name out of fear of reprisals. (no kidding)

  25. Timothy Says:

i feel frusteration with not privide tty, that has one but it broke, can u image that they permit me to use my sidekick but it wont work, they are idiot! also they say oh yes it works, i say it wont work nothing dial, and i fursteration and i asked for interpreter, they dont listen to me final, one lady heard me and told me no! u need go back change regular clothes not prison clothes!, so i did change and then later one police saw me regi and say WHAT THE F* you changed and GO back change to prision but lady Blocked him say BACK OFF

  26. Margaret Adamski Says:

Poor things, I know the police probably will be charge for assulted and you could sue him for assulted after you were not able to communicate without pen and paper. How can the police think deaf can talk. It is all of B***S***

Most varieties of deaf grew up without oral or prefer deaf. You did right thing to use pen and paper. That’s totally crazy cop. They will be probably trouble with A.D.A and Human Civil Right. I recommned that Human Civil Right is proably better than A.D.A. I hope your attorney might use which one better.
I hope you go pull through suffer for good cause by their assulted. you seem try hard to self defense. So the deaf doesn’t became victims!!
We doesn’t want to became more victims by anything by jail, Police Dept or whatever any names you can say “Stop abusive on deaf person or people.

    Margaret, from Seattle,WA.

  27. Lynn Nicola Says:

    Dear Mr. Bahl,
I’ve just read about your ordeal with the police and the illegal and unethical treatment afforded to you by them. I have a deaf grandson and I worry constantly that, as he grows up (he’s 10)he ,too, will encounter problems in society that will serve to justify a mistrust of the hearing world. Too many deaf people are abused, misunderstood, and frustrated because the hearing are so callus toward the deaf. Please, accept my apology, on behalf of the hearing, for the appalling treatment you received from law enforcement; you know, the guys who are supposed to be guarding YOUR rights!

  28. Karen Wooten Hazen Says:

Hi Doug, Remember me as your college friend at Gally and also you are one of my class of ‘74. I am very glad that you are okay and I keep praying for your health and need. You are still my dear friend. xo Karen

  29. Mike Bovee Says:

    HELLO DOUG,

U REMEMBER ME FROM TVI IN 1985,AND U WAS MY ENGLISH TEACHER IN SUUMER PREP…AND ALSO I WENT TO JAPAN,AND MET U AND COLORADO FOR NAD AND AUSTRIA FOR WFD….I HOPE,U REMEMBER ME….
I WAS SHOCKED THAT THE COPS BEAT U UP,THAT’S WRONG….I HOPE TO GET WELL SOON….I SUPPORT U!!! GOOD LUCK FOR THE COURT!!! MIKE BOVEE

  30. AW Says:

Doug, I heard about the beating, but no one semed to know who it was, then I got an email, leading me to this blog. I am so terribly sorry for your experience. Please know that there are people praying for you during this time. While there has been a movement in deaf awareness, I guess people are still very ignorant… things haven’t changed enough!

  31. Al Sonnenstrahl Says:

    Hey Doug!

Of all deaf people, you are the last person I could imagine being abused by the police! Glad you are doing OK physically. Itll take time for your emotions to go back to normal.

As you know, Carl Dupree was killed by the Gallaudet Police some years ago. There was a settlement between Gallaudet and the Dupree family that included a gag order. Because of this gag order, the police nationwide remain naive in handling deaf people.

In other words, this is an excellent opportunity for you to serve all deaf people by ensuring that your settlement doesnt include any form of gag order. By doing so, your unfortunate incident could be the catalyst in educating the police nationwide how to treat deaf people effectively without any unnecessary harm.

  32. Patty Hughes Says:

Hi Doug, we know each other for a long time and I am real sorry that you had to experience this kind. I look forward to getting your testimonies after everything is settled so we can educate the police community that it is absolutely unacceptable. We serve quite several victims who went through what you experience. It is different this time because I have worked with you and you are one of nicest human beings I know. Hang in there.

  33. Laura LaBudde Says:
