Jim McFadden and Presidency
Deaf Ebony,
I believe that you and I will smile when we meet. I definitely will. I will not ignore you.
I think that the board had no choice but to select an interim President. There was not enough time to re-open the process. I think it is clearly their intent to do so.Â
A valid search process for any executive of a company or a University takes time. It takes a lot of time after candidates have been narrowed down. Each candidate must be thoroughly reviewed, examined, and have a history that is what is desirable by the stakeholders. It cannot be rushed.
Accountability
No executive can possibly perform their job without making mistakes. Judgments must be made before key information is known. Hiring people is the most difficult part of that job. that is true all thru the organization. People have good resumes, they interview well, they speak well, then they are absolutely not what you expected.
Mistakes are not the problem. Resolve problems while they are small, change people’s responsibilities when they are not performing to your satisfaction. Change their job description. Up and down the line, any act of unethical conduct is not to be tolerated. It starts from the top.
I agree that the Students of Color decreed that the process was flawed, they spoke first. However, I was approached several times to apply. I felt that the whole process was wired. The key question at that time was whether JKF would even dare to apply, given the T-shirts and faculty resentment.
I applied. JKF applied. 31 days later she was chosen.Â
Another University is going thru a Presidential selection process. They will take five months instead of 31 days. They will make sure that their selection is the best fit for the University. They have a lot of senior executives on the search committee that have been thru similar processes, Gallaudet does not.

Commentary: I have always wondered why the president candidate search was so rushed. It is customary for universities to conduct the search for at least six months or longer, especially of an renowned university, not 31 days.Â

I can see why the process in the search for an Interim is a bit “rushed” but perhaps we can take satisfaction in the fact that the selection of the President has been given an 18 month timeline for selection, 24 months if necessary.

Let you know Jim’s last name is MacFadden. He is an extradionary man. He is also a good family man too.
I am glad he is speaking up in what he believe in. He would make a good GU president. He is also a good football player and his advices to the football team would be good too!

The process was reported to be ‘rushed’ because the students demanded that an announcement be made before school closed for the summer.

Whrer are you getting your info “Rushed because”? That is not true. The selection was annouced then becuase King is leaving in January- and the plan was to have the new President in place before he leaves. I’d like to know where are you getting your info?
