What is this, DBC?!? 22 minutes long to thank you?!?

*Yawn!* Excuse me for yawning. DBC’s recent vlog to thank each volunteers had put me to sleep after a loooooong day and night at my school reunion last night.
When I saw DBC and opened in hope they would defend their mission and ideals. I was crushed to find that they were just thanking the people who volunteer to help DBC to make the convention happen. Even though it is a good thing BUT 22 minutes long to thank almost each volunteers?!? What is this?!? Am I watching Academy Award on TV or what?!? Actually I feel lost and confused because they still stay silent and hidden while a dark huge cloud are over our heads. I believe that is not a very good move on their part. Hey remember, this is my opinion, not yours. They should come out and tell us what was really going on and also what is their next plan. They should ask anyone for the feedback. I couldn’t fathom to why their websites don’t have any comments for anyone to leave their feedbacks, opinions and/or ideas. Some of us have some burning questions to ask DBC. How do we get any answer from DBC? That’s what I wonder.
No, I’m not against DBC for the record. I’m all for ASL for Deaf babies. That is the most and main important for our next Deaf generations. All I want is some of us may want to know where and what do you stand behind and/or for. That’s all some of us want to know.

You are attempting to apply a double standard to the DBC.
You should apply the same standard to the DBC that you apply to other groups, such as the NAD. It is NOT true that DBC leaders are hiding or avoiding questions. That is totally false. Things are happening via e-mail, VP, etc.
Did you attend the conference? On Monday morning there was a big discussion between the participants and DBC leaders about the DBC’s future. If you were there, then you know, and also you would know that what you are saying now is false.

Regardless whether I attended or haven’t attended the DBC conference, I support DBC however they should be out in public to tell more than that. I’m not saying anything false. How can I say anything false? Show me what I said in false?
All I’m asking DBC to come on and tell us what they want to do with their plans. That’s all, nothing else. My question to you was the conference in private? Or in public? If that is for the public, so why can’t we have the same right to hear what they had in that discussion? What’s wrong with that?

Speaking of yawns, man its contagious and I saw a TV show the other day that was researching on whether or not yawns were contagious so a question to you all, did you yawn when you saw the yawn or the word yawn? cuz I did.
But lets to to the point of this matter, I am not going to try to downplay the gratitude that went out as it was probably deserved, however, I will admit that the only reason I watched the full 22 minutes was to see if there would be any other information aside from thank yous.
My feelings were mixed, only because I do agree gratitude is deserved in a lot of ways, but disappointed that there was no further information that many of us have been waiting to see. It gives me the impression that many of us are continuously ignored when it comes to more important matters.
Things take time. Be patient. The DBC is just STARTING.
Come on! The DBC has been tremendously successful and productive.
Just be patient and all the pieces will fall into place.

I saw many many of my friends names appear on the list. I am so proud they were there to support DBC. It sure looks like a lot of folks are willing to help make some very long and overdue changes in the system for Deaf babies.. Yay…DBC…
Those that criticize are typically those that do nothing. I am glad to see so many who went to the conference who “did something”.
Rambling and incoherent nonsense from a con-man does not qualify as true questions.
I yawned in middle of DBC’s 22 minutes thankathon. I didn’t watch to hear thanks. I watched to see what, if any message they had for us. I watched to see if they would indicate anything about the new organization with by-laws, etc. Nothing came. It seem as if they wanted to show the amount of support they had before Milwaukee because they lost a lot of support since then. They are losing support every day. The longer they ignore the people the more support they will lose. Our patience is wearing thin.
Whew… they must really think we are naive and perhaps dumb. My feeling is they are hoping things would pass and everybody would forget so they don’t have to produce answers because they have no answer for us. So they said thanks, instead, trying to act cool. Not cool.

FH, I do understand that some things take time, but given the nature of what has happened over the last two weeks, your would think that at least one of the core leaders would at least address the chaos that has gone on.
It does not take long to have one of them say, “Look I understand that theres been chaos going on and we have learned a lot from you people and we are now putting together a plan that addresses your concerns” or something to that effect.
Problem is that it hasn’t happened, its not like we are asking them to present us with a 5 year strategic plan immediately, but to at least address the chaos that has gone on ya know?
Suppose it was President Bush and some chaos arised out of something relating to him and he did not mention a word relating to it for over two weeks, how do you think the citizens would react and feel? He has done what is known as “spin doctoring” and I havent even seen that either from the core leaders.
I’m sorry but a registration chairperson’s vlog and the long thank yous, (which are deserved), is not a form a “spin doctoring” because the subject matter of the chaos is not addressed. “Spin doctoring” when done right, usually reduces chaos quickly.

The only “chaos” was the smoke screen created by a small number of people. That was not real chaos at all, just a stage play created by a few.
It doesn’t reflect well on DBC if its supporters are slander other people.

FH, it appears what you are perceiving as a smoke screen is what many other people are perceiving as a quest for truth, that that its what led to the chaos. If it were actually a small smoke screen as you call it, we wouldnt have seen the chaos that arose out of it.

It looks like DBC is “damned if they do, and damned if they don’t”. They’ve been berated for being silent. Now, they’re starting to present their side of things, and people don’t want to hear it. DBC and their volunteers put in a LOT of work to pull off the conference in a pretty short time. Of course they needed to make their thanks to all of the people that helped them. It could have been done in a letter, but since this is vlogland, they did it in a vlog… granted, a long one, but there were a LOT of people who were involved. Let’s try giving them a break! It looks like they are ready to start addressing many of the issues that were brought up in the last few weeks, since we have started to see postings by them. Just give them a little more time and let them follow their protocol in thanking the people who DID work with them first before paying attention to their detractors!

Excuse me, DonG. Thanking them for 22 minutes is appropriate? No, I don’t think so because it is way too long. A rolling credits should be sufficient if there are many people to thank, IMHO. Even though it is nice to acknowledge them for their hard work. I really do appreciate the hard work they did for DBC but 22 minutes vlog? Oh come on…give me a break! I want my 22 minutes back, for chrissake.
However, give them time or break wouldn’t help any more matters if they have gone silent for two or three weeks. Some of us while I can’t speak for others are really restless and anxious to find out what is going on. What’s wrong with that?

Well.. I didn’t get to see the video of 22 minutes long and now that I heard all about it so I don’t see any reason to watch it anyway.
I do agree that 22 minutes of saying thank you is way too long, no question about it. Who wants to sit through 22 mins either in person or watch videos saying thanks? I don’t think many does that’s for sure. Rolling credits or making it quick and short should do just fine.
I do have a question. I understand DBC’s goal is to promoting to educate hearing parents about ASL for deaf babies which is great! But… my question is why don’t they provide subtitles or even do voice-over? How can they get their messages to all hearing parents of deaf babies? We know for the fact almost all of hearing parents do not know ASL so how?
That’s the question I asked myself every single day and I asked around but no one have the answer for me. *sighs*

Smile, Sadly I think Ben needs to grow up. I can see he is still angry with Judy for a long time over a very small thing. Wish other people’s right to express does not bother him. I think Judy’s comment is beaufitul with her positive attitude and her comment is not about Ben. I bet Ben would attack me or get other supporters to get other people’s attention like he did to Judy if I say May God bless you. Without the Bible the world will be in a big mess and more hateful. My friend who is atheist, does not act like Ben, and his wife is christian and plays piano in the church and is a music professor at university near my hometown. My opinion, 22 minutes long does not matter how long they thanked over 700 attendants for their support. I agree with you 360 degrees! At first video, I thought DBC leader would be going to straighten out all chaos, but all she’s talking about is the Bible and then about $$$$$$$$$$. A big shock because the Bible says that a believer shall not serve God and Mammon same time. I was shocked that money was number one in DBC.

People like to tag my name onto all od DBC’s related problems because I exposed the truth and fought to restore integrity. It is undestandable and foruntnately I’m not into it for popularity contest. I’m not even interested in running for any position within DBC. I’m just doing it because it’s the right thing to do. And then afterwards I’ll move on and give everybody the peace they seek.
Like you, I support DBC’s original message but when they sent mixed messages I felt the need to stand up and help us prioritize our priorities.

Very good discussion, that is exactly what DBC needs to do, get on the track to hearing parents about their deaf children and that they are to be properly informed of everything with tact and professionalism.
I wish that $35,000 would be spent on information media production i.e. making dvd and website professionally done, get lobbyists to go to legistiators, work with companies that produce baby signing stuff, and be affiliated to Bilingual education organizations instead. They would be more than happy to give advices, network, and money.
If we have started with these strategies (former members like me did keep on telling that) at least some more deaf babies and children would be signing by then.

DBC is interested in showing thier appreciation to volunteers despite it is 22 minutes long or not. The important thing is that their thoughts count and hard working volunteers would feel appreciated. This is way more important than responding to the bad apples of DeafRead like Barry, Ben, Amy, etc.
You have the choice not to watch the video and don’t need to appreciate them since others would feel appreciated. However, you don’t have to be one of the bad apples and criticize someone for no reason at all.

Anyway, I assure you guys, I will write up a blog post soon, within a few days. I need to get over the jet lag, and catch up on all of the v/blogs first.
And FYI, if you check out my blog, in 2007, when I blasted John Egbert for deficit thinking and censorship on DeafRead, you will see me saying that I was a former member of DBC and that several were booted out.
Sheesh, wondering why you watch whole 22 min, if I were in your shoes, I will watch for about a min and if boring, just click, click and close then go to new vlog. Why you stay that long. Your fault, not 22 min vlogger.

I completely agree with you, Misha. it’s nothing wrong to thank volunteers but 22 minutes. Luckily me, I didn’t see 22 minutes. In my opinion, it doesn’t look good at all not to thank volunteers right after the convention and it’s not hard for a core member to announce that DBC will make a VLOG about the convention itself and what it plans to do in future weeks later. Instead, we see 22 thank you notes and then Judy’s VLOG. I don’t think that it is appropriate to refer to bible. Besides, Judy (http://www.ellasflashlight.com/?p=80) said that bible says that we should practice thank you. But it is common sense to thank people without any need to refer to bible. I’m not against the bible at all (I support it) but I think that its use in the VLOG about DBC is little out of place. Besides, I really thought that instead Judy Ella would present but unfortunately she didn’t.

Sure that DBC is still in the baby stadium but I am sure its core members did work in any organization before. If that’s the case they should have known that it’s not good to be silent for long time. It would happen no matter if in the hearing or deaf world.
If being silent for long time is a sign that something is not right. I hope that a core member really present DBC’s plan in future.
those who were booted from DBC established ASL THINK TANK, but what did they do? They earned no money. They did nothing. DBC has done amazingly more than them. IF they think they can do better , show it to us. Anne Marie uses her websie to show off her sons. It is like a mommy’s website.
I don’t blame core team for spending 22 minutes on vlog to thank everyone who particiapted in DBC event. In the past 2-3 weeks some have mentioned that 6-7 core team were only ones who worked together to run DBC event which was not true at all. This information is 100% lie. The core team had to show to the world that there were others who helped them to coordinate the event. I completely understand why they had to do this. They delegated some responsibilties to others. They did not do this alone. To thank everyone through writing or vlog is entirely up to them. Everyone has its own style.

Didn’t I tell you something previously? It does not take a million man march to make a point? What Anne Marie has done is utilizing the power of a pen stroke… as in “pen stroke is mighter than the sword”. She and her web site did a lot more for deaf children and our our society than DBC did with their short-lived rowdy band. They raised and spent $40,000 into one weekend and Anne Marie’s ASL Think Tank operated with less money than that and lasted longer.
It does not take a financial guru to figure who’s a lot brighter here. Your DBC or this empowered Individual named Anne Marie.
Additionally, what did you accomplish as an individual compared to Anne Marie? What are you personally doing for deaf education? If nothing in comparision then I’d suggest you speak for yourself from this point and on.
Penny… if they had so many help and support back then you would think they’d have some help with public relations and answer people’s questions. Three weeks passed and they are not doing anything. It tells me they are back to square one with only six or seven supporters who don’t know what to say.
I agree with Misha. I fast-forwarded the vlog hoping I’d see some clarification from a leader and was surprised that the thank-yous were still going on. While giving thank yous for people’s contributions to a conference is always a very good thing, the proper venue is *at* the conference, preferrably during a banquet or closing ceremony, where names are more relevant to the audience. I didn’t go to DBC so all those names were just meaningless to me as a viewer. I suspect this is why the Academy Awards have this rule to keeping thank yous short- the TV viewers will not sit still for long thank yous to names that means little to them.
