Deaf Social Network Sites - Are they worth your social status? Part 1
Hello, everyone…..
The reason for my blog is I want to ask any of you to tell your experiences with any social network sites such as MySpace.com FaceBook, TagDeaf, SeekDeaf, DeafMeek and others whether they’re good or bad. I’m telling my story how did I join a certain site since I don’t have anything to tell about MySpace.com and FaceBook. You can contact me by email where is on the left side of column. You can request to be anonymous which I’ll respect your privacy or give me your permission to use your name. It’s up to you.
My opinion on the social network sites is they can be good BUT they may not be good. Some people join the site to make friends. Some people join the site to keep in touch with their friends, classmates, family, relatives and even co-workers. They’re wonderful way to connect with people you feel that you need to open your feelings, thoughts, secrets and your emotions. But they may backfire on you if you use the social network site to make some new friends. It may make a negative impact on you. At the end you may feel hurt or upset, you need to learn to protect yourself. I’m planning on making the lists on “Do and Don’t” in my part 3 which would be my conclusion.
Since mid to late January, I have been hearing lots of stories about Seek Deaf site from the various people. I didn’t think much about the site however I kept hearing it on and off ever since until mid April I came across the blog about Tag Deaf at Fookem And Bug. When I was stunned to see there were 157 comments , however obviously there were two social network sites at war with each other right in front of my eyes. That brought me back the memories of the forum wars back in 2002 when I was a moderator in one of the baseball forums. Actually, I’m not that shocked because it is very common to see every forum, sites, etc. being at war with each other. That applies to both Deaf and hearing people. If the world is perfect without any problems, there would be something wrong with us.
Let me tell you about my experience when I first signed up at Seek Deaf site. The reason why I signed up is ex-members from Seek Deaf kept telling me that they had been banned for no apparent reason. Some were banned within minutes. Some within hours, even a week…some even longer. But the main point is how could they get banned within minutes is what I’ve been wondering.
On Wednesday, May 7th, at approx. 3:35 pm, I registered and thought of the screen name “DeafPigHead” even though I was aware of filling in my primary email in the form. To my surprise, I was required to put up a picture in my profile. I can’t fathom to why I was required to do since some may be very reluctant to show their real identity. I decided to put a pig picture instead. I got in without any problems after a registration confirmation via email. I browsed through all over and decided to put in my bulletin to say hello and whatnot.
They’re copied and pasted in here from that site to my notepad just in case they remove them within the site to show the proof that I do not change any word or omit anything.

In the chat box in front of Seek Deaf site that you wouldn’t be able to see unless you’ve registered first, there was a user popping in to say hello, we talked a very short time. I kept browsing through all the features to be more familiar with and read the rules. I’ve always read the rules before I ever post anything. It’s one of my habits since I’ve had been a moderator and an administrator at various forums in the past.
Then I went back to front, all of sudden, a user named Frau demanded if I’m Misha. Of course, I denied and inquired, “Who is Misha?” She went on and on about her saying bad things about MM. I asked, “Who is MM?” To tell you the truth I really don’t know much about MM aka MountainMan at all. She proceeded to tell me that I have to ask him. She kept shooting me the series of questions and all of sudden asked me about my email address that she obviously read in the registration mode. I said, “Oh, it’s just random that came off of my head.” I knew she didn’t believe me but I didn’t care but hoped she would give me a benefit of doubt. She said, “Okay…let me post to welcome you to this site.” Good so far, hmm. Not so fast…..
I decided to post my first thread in General forum after searching for the newbie section (it wasn’t there at that time) to tell my “story” and my sincere desire to make more new friends. Sure, I do like to make more new friends. There were a couple of members and Frau welcoming me. Of course, Frau did mentioned “Misha” again in one of her post. I shook my head in amazement that she would pursue her “Misha” mystery. In my thread, it contained no bad things, swear words nor insults, not even a single personal attack. All it was my “life” story which I will include in part 2 for you to read and judge whether there was anything wrong with it. Actually to tell you the truth, I thought my “life” story was funny and somewhat nutty. My thread/post will be in the next installment of this series. (Part 2)
That’s it went on while I was browsing through the site, after I was in other window, I returned back to the site and found myself banned for no apparent reason. I only lasted at that site for mere 2 1/2 hours. I emailed the site to ask why was I banned and even asked what did I do wrong that I could try to rectify anything. No answers to this day.
As of May 9th, 2008 MountainMan and Scotweb had already pulled off their site and moved to a new domain site and an entire new name of site as well. It’s www.deafmeek.com. That new name has amused me very much because obviously they may not know what that word “meek” means. Check this at: meek If they like it, so be it.
Any current or ex-members of either SeekDeaf, TagDeaf or even DeafMeek can either comment here or email me about your experiences with any of those sites. Those experiences will be in my next blog’s part 2. Anonymous is accepted since your privacy is respected and valued as well.

Amen to that one. There’s always a war going on, even within ourselves. But the thing is, it will never end, people love drama, that’s why all of these stupid reality TV shows stay on the air, and so the drama follows into the online world as well. There are always going to be rumors starting and people who were once “best friends til the end” now no longer speaking. Alot of people these days are just too concerned with materialistic things. There’s always someone bragging about what they have, who their b’f’s or g/f’s are, how much money they have, how much safer they think their neighbor is, - and frankly I just don’t give a shit about all of that. I don’t concern myself with materialistic things - if i have it, i have it; if i don’t I don’t. I don’t care, fuck ‘em!!
Wow. So much time on hands of some. All drama and spats so commonplace in the Deaf community. It’s no wonder most from the oral and CI establishments are laughing at us. I’m not biased here because I’m Deaf and a native user of ASL.

It’s also commonplace in the Hearing World as well. Think about the both hearing and deaf people in MySpace.com site, there are some problems going on there. Some kids are being cyberbullied, insulted, etc. that cause some of their self esteem being going down. Do not think it is all about Deaf only….it happens to everyone in everywhere.

Thank you for share about one of v/vlogger who was attacked one person that I wrote and told them,It need to stopped attacked on my dear friend’s b/vlogger last January. It was kind of hurt me so badly.
One guy from Wash. D.C. also was attacked me on my written on another deaf blogger. I think Attack is not necessary to attack or bullying on language on their love friends. Deaf b/blogger need to respected of their view opnion. It is kind of childless of insult each other.
All of deaf or hard of hearing b/vlogger as consideration that “Our deaf sisters and brothers in the world, No need attack on their b/vlogger.”

Like I wrote an article at our website, “Fookem and Bug” as I mentioned that social networking sites can be either good or bad. People have to make their personal choice to join or not..
However, I must say that we need to avoid people who are two faced and unprofessional. We need to be careful and never trust anyone online you never meet in person. Do not give your personal information to owners/ moderators or anyone unless you trust them. I often see them hurting the members. They are the wolves in the sheep’s clothing.
These two faced manipulators are the bane of business and social life. It might be a power game, it might be a career strategy, or it could just be sheer jealousy that drives the two-faced gossips but they can utterly ruin the cohesion of any business or social group and even your life.
But what can you do about them?
It’s a lucky person who has never fallen victim to the hypocrite who gossips about you behind your back and complain to you about other people.
On base what you have wrote here are truthful fact…

Like I said earlier that this is beautiful well-written! You put everything in perfectly and yes everything is pretty much true. Deaf or not, a lot of strange things going on social network but I can imagine using “deaf” social network can do much damages in some ways because deaf community is very small.
But in general, it is no safe everywhere for social network, they can easily build a group such as cult working as a team attacking, putting down on others, etc. It can get scary sometime.
When someone get banned for no reason, that tells you something is fishy. Maybe that site is created for certain group of people trying to start up something, I don’t know. I’m with Bug all the way, too.

Of course I know it happens in the “hearing” world but here I’m talking about a significantly higher incidence rate than compared to the hearing world. Got it?
You have beautifully written it down and got me chuckling at how people react like questioning someone is called paranoid. Its not always the deaf community is the hearing as well i know for a fact its all over the place.

I’m looking forward for 2nd and 3rd part of installment. So far I’m agreeing with everything you are saying. They seem to act like they don’t have to answer but why they keep inviting everybody and end up slamming the door on their face.. Not wise thing to do. To me it show abusive of power and their words are really EMPTY!! Those moderators want to control people’s social life on internet. Which is very wrong.
To me it shows that they want your IP so they can ban you from their site. Which is abusive of power right there. Select who can come in and who can’t come in.
Especially for people who haven’t said one word. Some are really private and very slow to warm up. But they seem they like to force people open up against their will. It is not freedom of making friends. It is FORCE on their part. It is not right in my opinion. Hurt lot of people’s feelings and leaving them very confusing. I’m pretty sure they are going WTF is going on. No doubt about it.

I’m one of several monitors at Seekdeaf/Deafmeek. I like to comment on what you have embarked on an “odd” journey recently.
First of all, it is unfortuante that the negative drama have been picked up by Fookem & Bug last April. It brings unwanted attention to everyone who works hard to bring social networking website up as a good Internet product to use and enjoy while the forum in F&B website gives a tool to troublesome people to spread their wings to pull the rug under some members that was caught in or workers who is trying to quell the storm and bring the calm weather by spearing their vulgar words in the efforts to pull them down and stand over them with cold stares. Maturity was nonexistent there for some time.
Frau is one of the monitors at DM and we are working everyday to ensure that SD/DM are free of scammers and troublemakers that we have seen in TagDeaf or from the cyberspace and trying to make current website, DeafMeek, enjoyable for all members. Tagdeaf does not have monitors yet however Alex, the owner of that site have hinted that he would have one soon. What I have read about your interaction with Frau–(you marked that in boldface font above in your article)–I am sorry to say this but I felt that you are playing games with her by denying that you are Misha and made up with the email address upon registering that prompted her to shoot an array of questions. I don’t know if you did exhibit respect toward Frau as she was inquiring to get to know you but your blatant actions may have indirectly got you banned.
I see that former SD members and current TD members have commented with their posts with eager emotions to see what Part 2 will bring.. Well, all of them (yes, all!) have exhibited poor civil behavior in both TD and SD that resulted in having them be removed from the membership list per owner/montiors’ decisions. They will not be welcomed back in because the owners strive for clean and fun website as much as possible and do acknowledge that those kinds of dramas that you are discussing does exist in other hearing social networking websites not just deaf social networking websites.
By your intentions to post your thread about your “life” story in Part 2, I implore you to demostrate a lassiere-faire attitude on all deaf social networking websites not just a bias toward TagDeaf/SeekDeaf/DeafMeek because the quarrels/dramas, etc does not make them “unique” in the cyberspace because this is seen elsewhere such as Facebook, MySpace, Tagged, etc. The owners of two deaf social network websites, Alex and MountainMan, are working hard tirelessly to keep everyone happy and do get exhausted and annoyed when the sniping/backstabbing dramas occurs but it ’s not their fault, isn’t it? It’s the people. Do we have the right to tighten the checks and balances by removing them out? I believe so in order to eliminate the heavy load of dramas and untrustworthy behavior that is weighing down the network.
I conclude my post by explaining why “Meek” word was chosen that have amused you in a way. The owners wanted to emphasize on humbleness of a social network website that would give a person a vision of “no drama and quiet/docile environment” or at least a minimum amount of the craziness that we saw in other websites so they thought of this word, meek. Hence, more emphasis is placed on scanning and checking out new members as they register in and ban them out if necessary to keep the troublemakers out. As a monitor, I suppose this would bring you a chuckle but at least I respect the owners’ decision to use this particular word. I hope you and the readers do the same.

Hi~ I’m flbigmouth. As new as can be since last year May. I joined DSC (Deaf Single Connection). A dear friend of mine referred me to Tag Deaf. I joined there. Well, **** introduced me like this….
“Be careful with some gangs here. There are gangs here and you need to know who they are.” She gave me their screen names. We made friends… shared my life with her, “All About Me”. (I wasn’t aware of **** gossiping with others about me.) We even made pix of ourself and put title up that says “Tango Laidies” and underneath that pix was a song called “Pretty Woman”. I’ve met few and by the time July came around, I’ve been name called, backstabbed, bullying, liar, two faces, DUI, Cunt, Whore, and they even made a pix of my into a monster animation. They all thought it was funny. I’ve lost friends, friends I made from the beginning. I had one or two friends who stood by me the whole way through. My self esteam went down the hill. I became depressed, and lonely. I didn’t have many friends to chat with nor had I met anyone interest in me. My reputation gotten worse and it was just plain aweful!
I have from time to time, asked the Admin. of TD with several letters asking him to remove threads that was made a pix of me with monster animations. They kept on and never stopped. Few times it was removed, but every time I post something that I disagree, they post that pix again, and again, and again. I asked to closed my account. Then I logged in with another screen name. Chomp_flbigmouth. Simple and reconized. I stood back on my feet again. I am not and will not let anyone win over me. For what? Nothing. Just because I’m the victim doesn’t mean I need to quit. I’m not a quiter! If they want to be the bully, they can have it. They can run as far as they can, I’m not buying their story nor will I be friend with them again. Not even IF they say “I’m sorry”.
I stood back on my feet. I post here and there. Left my opinion out from their forums, blogs, gallery etc… Just posted what I want to post and replied to those I knew who are good at heart. My true and trust friends.
Yes, I tried to logged in Seekdeaf once. I never claimed my confirmation. Of course, I was banned. I thought that if I just go ahead and try to log in, then all of the trouble will go away. But it seems that I’m not the trouble one after all. This site has very limit access and it’s all depends who the person is to join the site.
Seekdeaf/meek, I do not know how you can be open and be as friendly as you like for your site to be, but you have a circle of friends who are allowed in your site. That is just you. I’ve already shunned you out. I’ve already told you that it is a good idea that you don’t reply back to me nor say anything to me. Keep it that way.
TD, Alex, does not need a monitor…. reason for this is because he has his reason. You can disagree with that, or you can agree. It’s not your site, it’s his. He can do whatever he wants to do. That is him. There is nothing anybody can do as well as Seekmeek can do whatever he wants to do.
As far as I’m here, I was a victim, and today I know where I’m standing. I’m not stupid, but learning. I’m sure this isn’t the end of the world, however, I shall move on and hope to find the right person of my life. In the meantime, I am enjoying meeting others and making new friends. Now that my true friend and I have reunited…. I look forward to the bright side.

This comment got me chuckling you sayig Frau is the victim then why is she going around questioning people who they are ?? Is that a rule to do that in your DM ??? I dont think so that is so rude for her to question newbies that way. I wouldnt go around questioning people at all leave them alone and be nice and not just going around like a dictator like hitler !!!! Frau should not be the victim it is the newbies end up being the victim. If you want newbies to join get your moderator stop questioning people let them be. Moderators should concentrate on scammers and anyone who email to complain to moderators, question them and make decision not on newbies who comes along and get banned straight off just because you ASSUMED they are troublemaker.

FLBM, I do not know you very well but from what I have seen in Tagdeaf weeks ago that you exhibited kind of behavior that hurt one former member with racy photos. This kind of behavior is not acceptable. People in SD/DM have said this kind of behavior is not what is expected in a social networking website and a good ground for your removal from that website.
Misha, I’m surprised at your response. So? You digged to identify my location but that is not the whole point here. I have tried to envoy my thoughts to you. I don’t know if you have read it carefully enough? I have nothing else to say to you now.

I understand your venting. We at SD/DM, as a group, try to keep the website enjoyable as possible, unlike at TagDeaf, by instituting screening for all scammers and new members. If the group deems a member a potential troublemaker based what we have seen in TagDeaf or elsewhere like AllDeaf, DSC, etc. then we do not want to allow that person in. Just like if you want to be member of a greek organization in college or interview for a job at a company or doing an entrance exam into a graduate school.
If you do not do well in those situations, the greek organization, company, and graduate school would NOT allow you enter.
What would you do, FLBM, Misha, and JJ? Gripe or move on to something else?
I wonder if griping is a mature way to do. You can speak up and drum up loud sounds but it would not achieve anything because the greek org, company, and graduate school would STILL will not let you in, period. This principle applies to SD/DM and any other social networking websites like MySpace, Facebook, etc.

Actually, for your information, those would inform you the reason why they wouldn’t let you in no matter what. YOU only, DeafMeek wouldn’t give any reason why the members are banned. It is the most poorest move on your part. At least you should have given them the honest answer, but you didn’t. Your staff didn’t even bother to email them the reason why they’re banned. Not good idea, MtDew. You and your staff have broken the admins/mods’ cardinal rule of the forums.
For your information, I do not gripe…I pass this message along to the people and let them judge for what and/or who the DeafMeek staff are.
You and your staff need to take a long look at the mirror because you have no respect. Almost everyone had lost your respect already.

Let me tell you straight up. When I opened my picture in the Gallery, it was used in an abused way that it had hurt me from day one. No one wants to have that “POOP” animation that was made by Alex Chu aka Duro_Dragon. and bity . They had made the animations so bad that I had asked the TD Admin. to remove it from time after time… They never stopped and left it alone nor had they moved on, because they posted it in SeekDeaf when it first opened. Knowing I’m not allow to be a memeber there, that they say whatever they want to say about me and abuse more behind my back. Right now the only reason why you ask for members of their privacy is because you’re looking for the “SPY”. You all tried to elminate someone from sharing your “say~so” in Deadmeek, so none of us will know. We all know one way or the other. It’s not about privacy, it’s about finding out who spying in deadmeek’s site and who told who in a way ‘She said and He siad”. That’s childish, immature and unsecussful business. Talking about Dangerous, your site is dangerous because you people broke and vilolated members privacy.
Why on earth would someone wants to have their privacy post in Deadmeek when you demand to know their privacy? Hell no! You have no right to ask anyone for their picure and their real name at any time. nor about who they are and what is gong on in their real life. They have ever right toPROTECT their identy because they do not want to end up what DD and Bity had done to me! Do you ever think I liked what they did to me? Hell no. If you were in my shoes, you wouldn’t like it either. So there, protect the privacy and RESPECT that. There is nothing you can do about it. Oh yeah, I remember they said that they wish my kids were taken away fromme just because I had three DUI. Tried to say how awful I am and how unfit mother I am.
Oh yeah, they said that I slept around and that I am a whore, and a cunt.
Oh yeah, I remember they called me names. They even tried to find the best name they could give me, but the list was too long and too many that “IT” couldn’t picked one. I’ve got all the names they listed….interesting.
Oh yeah, I remember they siad that I am not deaf or hard of hearing. Which I grew up hard of hearing and now I’m deaf.
Oh yeah, I remember they said that I do not know sign language. And I have attended at Gallaudet University. As well as I am an Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in their mainstream classroom.
Oh yeah, I remember they said that I tried to fit in with the Deaf people. I don’t have to because I’m one of the Deaf people.
Oh, yeah, shall I add more? I remember TD members cut out a picture of me and placed it on an animation of having sex with prisoners.
You people have ruined me from my privacy and broke my privacy and showed no respect at all. Why and what was the purpose of those things that had done to me in the first place? Why did these people bullyng me they way they did? Why didn’t anyone stop them from making it worse? Why would someone want to do that in public? It’s all because you can. You all are not trusted worth a jack shit and I shall say that each and every one of you should owe me an apology. You all damage me so down bad in anyway you tried to find to push me down so low, it’ll all come back to you. Now, don’t you DARE tell me what I had done wrong. I am sorry that you had to go thru the experience you explained to me. Remember my quote—”Treat the people the same way you want them to treat you”. The world is so fickle and individualized, imagine that! If you jump the gun and throw a brick at someone, they will return the fire. That’s sad. I’m not speaking for Frau, MM, or anyone but in general in deaf community.
FLBM, I do know your background thru leaks and it’s unfortunate that the leak had to occur. I’m sure you have some strengths and weaknesses as a human being and frustrated to an extent like everyone else such as Tassielady, Dude, Jacey, and Cloggielady. We also went thru rough times, too with everyone at war with everyone! That’s too bad.
But I noticed a trend here that people couldn’t let the matter go and move on. I wonder! I’m not a counselor or psychlogist but I wonder why you all have difficult time to forgive people who have wronged you and move on?
Sure, there are three truths to this whole thing. One truth is from you all, one truth is from other side, and the third truth rests with God because he knows what really happened.
Revenge, retailation, bashing, showboating, waterboarding, or any method designed to pull people down aka in crab theory is not recommended because it will hurt you more and more. More anger would be built up and more spewing words from you all here on Misha’s, Live Yahoo!, and TagDeaf. That is not good for your health. I would strongly suggest that you cut the ties from those people you are estranged with and cool off.
Remember I am not speaking for DM or anyone in the DM social site but rather I’m speaking as a concerned deaf peer.
DeafMeek is just a website with a different group of people who happen not to go along with you for a reason. The reason may never be revealed but only known to God. I do hope you understand what I am trying to convey to you and I do not want to be your enemy in any form.

Thank you for your understanding with some situation that some of us had to deal with from the past. We’ve learned our lesson and we are better at where we are today. To repect members privacy is to be kept confiditually is nesscessary at any site we enter of becoming a member. Tomorrow will only give us another day to make it better with ourself and in the near future.
