My Predictions for 2008

Since I entered the DeafRead.com blog/vlog world in January 2007, I started by not having much confidence in vlogging.  There were then 30 or so bloggers and vloggers and their numbers grew to be more than 500 by the end of 2007.

So now I wonder…

What will the Year of 2008 will be like?

2,000 or more b/vloggers?

More empowered Deaf leaders to inspire us?

More coalitions, parent groups, etc?

Here’s My Predictions for the Year of 2008

–Workshops

–being able to download instructions on “How to make the most out of your Vlogging” from Deafread or other sources and spread awareness on YouTube, Google, MySpace and others about past experiences and future goals/ambitions for Deaf Education and language.

–More and growing coalitions such as:

Orange & Brown Coalition - empowering and educating the community to feel good about themselves.

Parents of Visual Babies Coalition - possible new coalition for parents to promote bilingualim for their visual babies and demand that Congress encourage all babies, hearing and deaf, to start learning a visual language (ASL) before speech is able be taught (i.e. before the child’s vocal chords develop.)

The Biggest Deaf Rally in history at Milwaukee on June 27th and 28th, 2008.

The oral-only method/ideology will be considered biased and bilingualism will be widely accepted for all visual babies by (hearing) parents.

What are your predictions?

Have a wonderful year of 2008!

  1. Well, from your predictions, I would say I’m on board with being one of the many empowered Deaf leaders to inspire others. I’m out to uplift rather than bring down. That’s my goal.

    Happy New Year.

  2. LaRonda,

I admire your attitude and many have told me how great you are.

  3. Thank you, John.

    My heart is full.

  4. The biggest deaf rally on June 27th and 28th, 2008

Do you have more information about that?

  5. I don’t know about other young parents out there, but I’m doing my part to teach my son ASL. I was stunned to see how early he learned to sign–I was responding to “diaper” and “hungry” regularly by the time he was 2 months old! I must admit it makes parenting a lot easier. I’m hard-of-hearing, so I figure teaching my son ASL will make it easier to communicate in loud environments. He also knows how to sign “mother” and “father.” When his father was off on a trip, my son was able to show me he missed his daddy–just by signing! A six-month old that’s never been exposed to sign language would never be able to do that. Another thing–Sunday mornings I sign to my son when we’re in church and he stays pretty quiet, since he knows that during church we only use ASL. All the old ladies think I’m an awesome mom! I loved your book by the way–I just finished reading it today.

  6. LaRonda,

Thank you for your nice comments

    And Brandy B C

It is so good to hear that your baby is communicating with you and your husband. Take a lot of videos of your baby and your son will be awed when he sees it for his 21st birthday.

And thank you for reading my book. Please do keep in touch as I want to know about your son very much.

    John
