AGBell AVT Conference at Arlington, Va

On Thursday, supporters and contributors of Deaf Bilingual Coalition will meet at Gallaudet SAC near the bookstore in the dining room area anywhere from 9 am to 3 pm. Come anytime to join us on discussions about the protest.

We will have an interpreter from 9 am to 3 pm on Friday and 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday. We have 60 T shirts for sale starting on Thursday to help defray expense.

In 48 hours, supporters and contributors have donated over $1,000 to Deaf Bilingual Coalition by linking, http://www.cad1906.org (California Association of the Deaf)- go there and click on the left side (Support for the Deaf Bilingual Coalition). Any amount will help us a lot.

This protest is about Baby Signing for hearing and especially deaf babies.

The intellectual benefits of baby signing include:

1. Baby Sign Language increases the speed of the development of verbal language.

2. Baby signing increases vocabulary.

3. Baby signing reinforces the use of verbal language.

4. Baby Sign Language promotes language learning through concept.

5. Baby Signing reinforces a child’s communication attempts.

6. Baby Sign Language promotes early literacy.

7. Baby Sign Language increases interests in books.

8. Baby Signing promotes the early use of complex sentences.

Now I hope you can see that this is a clear message that the DBC group is able to point out to the media.

This will be one of the demonstrations that will allow the concerned public to open up the dialogue and raise public awareness that will eventually get this table brought to a legislative level.

Now it is the time to protest for the sake of deaf babies who suffer the language deficiency just because organizations like AG Bell whose partnership is with AVT continue to spread the propaganda without the benefits of using signs.

It is evident that they are not being inclusive on explaining to hearing parents on how using signs with their deaf babies ages 0-4 years old are able to benefit greatly based on 8 points listed above. It is evident that there are multiple benefits for hearing babies using signs and that deaf babies are missing out these opportunities based on 8 benefits. Now we need to ask: Why is it that signs are still not part of deaf babies lives?

Join us at Crystal Gateway Marriott (Just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.)
1700 Jefferson Davis Highway
Arlington, Virginia
On July 27th and 28th from 9 am to 3 pm

  1. I’m concerned about the continued use of “baby signs” as a term because I understand this is a trademarked term and it is NOT ASL. This is going to cause a lot of misunderstanding. You and other people participating in the protest need to find a different phrase to define what you’re talking about. For example, “signing with babies” or something.

  2. I’ll be thinking of you all! For the sake of our Deaf and HH children in the next generation!

  3. Does your protest group have the permission of the California Association of the Deaf MEMBERS to collect funds for the protest? I don’t recall seeing anything about a CAD vote on that question. Just who decided to allow such funding collection?

  4. Jenny,

BabySigns is the trademarked term, a one word trademark.

  5. Hey John,

Are there any BabySigns DVDs to sell and sponsor the DBC (Deaf Bilingual Coalition)??? I need to buy those DVDs for my nephew and 2 neices who got their newborn hearing babies (less than 3 months)..

    Thanks, Shawn

  6. Hi Shawn,
    Try http://www.sfibaby.com/templates/index.php

this site I got from Barb DiGi is owned by a deaf person

  7. Shawn,

Barnes & Noble’s and Borders’ bookstores carry
    a DVD of “Baby Signs”.

  8. Use the term “baby sign language” - it is the general term to use and I recommend the DVDs by Signing Time (http://www.signingtime.com/) and Sign-a-Lot (http://www.signalot.com/). Anything produced by Baby Signs is not 100% ASL and may be misleading to the public.

  9. Hello Jean Boutcher,

Wondering if Barnes & Nobles and Borders bookstore support Deaf Bilingual Coalition? I prefer to wait for CAD to make announcement first to see if any company donated to support Deaf Bilingual Coalition then I will be happy shop that company! Shawn

  10. Thank you, Sara. That is what I was trying to say. A space between the words may make it not trademarked, but it’s still confusing and misleading.

Everybody, let’s please follow Sara’s suggestion - “baby sign language.”

Thanks and best wishes with the protest!

  11. I am in total agreement with the statements declared about the use of sign language with deaf babies to foster language development. And I question the moral ethics of the AV movement.

But going beyond that I believe a joint effort supporting BI Bi with Cued Speech will more assuredly reach the stated language goals. AV does not recommend Cued Speech either.
I am truly waiting for the day when both ASL and American English represented by Cued Speech become the norm for deaf babies and continue throughout their schooling. Then Deaf Children will have total access to English and to ASL. It’s the right thing to do. Omitting ASL or choosing to ignore the mode which visually presents an unambiguous representation of English is also unethical.
