DEAF POWER

I watched Law and Order on April 3rd and was happy to have real deaf actors on the show. I thought it came out ok and wished that it did not have that part about the protest rally when the deaf people were “hollering”  DEAF POWER.

Then saw another show last night, April 4th, CSI NY which was a repeated show but I have not seen it before. I thought that this CSI NY program was much better.

Why did I thought that CSI NY was better than Law and Order?

Because in Law and Order, the part about the protest and DEAF POWER. I was disappointed about the wording, DEAF POWER.

Here’s my opinion, when the society(program viewers)  hear or see the word, DEAF POWER, it tells the society that the Deaf community wants or demands to have “patronize” political correctness attitude towards them.

Another thing that I would like to say about Law and Order vs. CSI NY. My wife, Shirley and I like to watch CSI NY because the male and female actors, both in the program have equal superior intellectual attitudes compare to Law and Order. The Law and Order program seems to have the male to be more dominate intellectual than the female actors.

What do you think?

How do you feel about using “DEAF POWER”  terminology when we are trying to achieve a solution to a problem?

Does it make you feel like a second class citizen in intellectual sense?

Are we smart enough to solve problems with our intellectual level, which we no doubt have.

  1. Yes, I agree with you about the term of Deaf Power. It is too radical and “you vs me” attitude. It could harm our Deaf Culture and our reputation/identity.

Deaf Rights is the one I like. That term of Deaf Rights helps people think governments and non government organizations (private and public organizations) did not respect Deaf people’s rights.

  2. I agree with you. Law and Order - I liked the part is they used most same word is Deaf. Acting is different story. I don’t see the word like hearing impaired, hard of hearing or other words what they talked, did you. DEAF POWER is way out of line by the writer. I didn’t watch all. CSI:NY - pretty good overall for me. One thing bother me is both shows show same wrong concept is signed cop. In real world, there are mostly profressional interpreter present in any cases. I wonder why they try to impress that the police dept do have the signed cops in USA? My 2 cents.

  3. Yes, I tend to wince when some deaf people say “Deaf power!” It is very socially isolating, making the hearing world feel that the deaf people have a grudge against them. Yes, we have diversity in the deaf culture, but we should accept all kinds of people, no matter what, instead of putting them down just because they fail to meet the certain requirements to get in the deaf community.

Deaf rights… hmmm… it catches the politicians’ eyes, yes. If the term deaf power is used, it is a turn off and we won’t get anywhere with this deaf power term.

  4. How about Deaf Pride? LOL

  5. I think DEAF POWER is something that stays within the Deaf Community or teaching in ASL class where people understand the history behind it. That it is typically used to make a deaf person feeling good and empowered, not against a hearing person or hearing people.

That does look BAD in a protest.

Not for the general public to get the wrong impression or causing people to cringe.

    Just my two cents. :D

    …or is that .0000002 in today’s inflation?

  6. I think CSI:NY is better. More humble - like everyone else. Law and Order show is just way too much - Deaf Power, CI, celebration of the new Deaf baby (no such thing to throw a party bec the baby is deaf), so on. Alot of Hypocrites. Think of the woman who is the dean and marries to the hearing person. Deaf protesters demand her to resign etc .. Alot similiar to the Gallaudet protest last fall, the protesters demand JKF to resign from her job as a president. Smile .. oh boy no one has responsed to my blog about this earlier. lol At least I am involved with everyone in Deafread and I am a somewhat newcomer. Have a great day!

  7. By the way - I agree with Deaf taz. Deaf Pride sounds better. Deaf Power is too much for me. :-)

  8. Thank you! Diane

  9. I found “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” televison epsiode - “Silencer” kinda hilarous and laughable and enjoyable than the CSI NY.

We should be not feeling offensive about the television display “DEAF POWER”. Almost all the television shows and movies love to trivalize the so-called social deviance and radical concept for the purpose of storyline and plot.

I found the strong-headed deaf theatre professor to be real enlightened and entertainment since I totally agreed with him about the demands for deaf cops, deaf jury pool and deaf judge. Why not!

In the U.S. Constitution, it clearly define our rights to the jury of our own peers and stand before unbiased judicial system, ex. judge and prosecutor.

We should not make a big deal about the ‘Silencer’” epsiode at all. Same thing with “CSI NY”. Who give any hoots about the vast intellectual wasteland - TV?”

  10. L&O: CI perpetuated many Deaf Myths (while at the same time trying to dispell others.)

The Deaf that were portrayed as APPEASING Hearies were portayed as symapthetic, while those appearing more “RADICAL” were more likely suspects in the murder. The sypmapthetic Speaking Deaf professor was SHOT (who was called a TRAITOR and “Not Deaf Enough”). The more radical non-speaking Deaf were considered the prime suspects (and one WAS the murderer). While the CODA cop and the Deaf person who SPOKE gave the clues that SOLVED THE CASE.
