Let’s fight for Bilingual Education for all Deaf children
The lack of Bilingual Education program in Deaf schools, oral method schools, mainstreamed schools is the main reason why Gallaudet is in danger of losing its credibility as University. Majority of the teachers at these schools including Gallaudet do not have the high standard of ASL communication skills which is very important to use in teaching English(writing and reading) and other courses.
Currently, we’re under review by MSA (Mid Atlantic States Accreditation). This is a peer to peer organization that are joined by over 500 universities and colleges in the mid-atlantic states.
Purpose of this organization is to allow us to share information, and bring in quality education for our future students. In other words, accreditation tells other people that Gallaudet is a legitimate university, and students that graduates from Gallaudet is prepared to work in the field they studied for.
For a long time, Gallaudet has received accreditation from MSA, but now, we are under probation. Our Accreditation is in danger of being provoked. In other words, Gallaudet may not be recognized as an University. This would means that all students who has been studying for their courses will mean nothing. Their degree will mean nothing. Their time spent in Gallaudet University is all, but a sham.
Please note, we receives accreditation every 10 years with every 5 years of Institutional Review Report (IRR). Last accreditation was 2001. 2006 was our 5th year, and we submitted IRR near the end of 2006. The report that Gallaudet generated was not satisfactory, and with recent negative media, and closing of the University during the protest had brought Gallaudet under watchful eyes of MSA council.
The most damaging was negative media. One example of very damaging comments was made by our very own Gallaudet University’s president.  He was quoted saying “Our standard of education is so low, we basically plucked any warm body off the street to keep our enrollment number higher”.
If Gallaudet loses accreditation from MSA, it would be a good idea to start a National Deaf Revolution to develop the Bilingual Education system for every oral, speech, deaf, heard of hearing schools by law all across the country…no exceptions.
