I agree with you that all Deaf schools need to offer ASL courses for deaf students. It is same concept as hearing students who required to take English even those it is their second language. I believe Deaf students must taking ASL as requirement. I made a vlog about (click) Deaf students take ASL classes. It is vital for all of us to present to all Deaf schools to establish ASL class for Deaf students.
Definitey right! Deaf schools need to have ASL courses. So deaf kids will know the foundation of ASL by natural. This matter needs to be done sooner the better. I am glad that you brought this serous matter up,
It’s absolutely necessary for deaf and hard of hearing students from K-12 to take ASL courses with structure, grammar, facial expressions, and classifiers, and to improve their signing skills that will apply for English in writing and reading skills by concept and expressions.
Thank you for bringing this great topic to discuss.
I think we should for each of OUR states, that knows of the Deaf school, go there and give them this idea.
For Example, you live in Florida, go to FSDB, I live in NY go to RSD (Rochester School for Deaf), So and So lives in MD go to FSD and all give this proposal!
Find the RIGHT teacher for the ASL - of course PREFER Deaf!!
Yes, I grew up at deaf school. I have deaf parents. I was taught by my parents. I was sent to deaf school. I met new friends and found myself criticizing how I signed. We had a big argument. I kept ASL what I learned from my parents. All houseparents MUST go to ASL class. They gave wrong sign if they do not know any sign of that words. Very frustrated. I have seen teachers always have their ways of teaching. They signed differently due to their learning from where they were from. We just need to have a standard ASL book to teach to start with pre-k to elementary schools!
Some do make up signs on own - peer talk. I support that idea but apparently the kids are not interested in the class at one school. Mostly those later after H.S. are interested in taking this course. They realize from their life experiences what’s missing.
