Very good! I laughed at times because I could easily related to them! My HEARING friend told me. My HEARING brother knew that! My HEARING neighbor helped me. Ask HEARING people if it’s okay to sit here! Etc. Time to change! Yes!
That is a PERFECT example of what hurt my marriage. I won’t go into specifics in respect for everyone involved, but if you want a SPECIFIC example, it’s “hearing people knows everything.” That can even hurt a marriage if we listen to hearing members of the family over the affected spouse in preference.
It is totally wrong. I am the only one who has truly been in the shoes, it does not matter what people say or what they heard. The bottom line is that my name is John, and I have my own shoes that I wear, and I know what it is like walking in those shoes.
“My hearing mom said it’s best…” “My hearing sister graduated with a BA degree in psychology, and she said..” “My hearing cousin is a pastor and thinks..” “Hearing people know what to do..”
“You had to communicate messages to your son through your hearing mother-in-law, so it’s better to have her there when you visit your son, so she can assist in communication.”
They might be educated, but they’re not in my shoes.
To be honest I have no problem communicating and playing with my son. Love speaks louder than words. And I can understand 75% of what my son speaks, the same we can only understand 75% of the hearing public, that is no different. We didn’t need the hearing mother-in-law to hold our hand when we venture out into the public, right?
That is totally different if I totally ignored my son. But I watch his lips very intently, to the point of straining my eyes. Sometimes I ask him to repeat, in a very loving and fatherly way, hugging him the same time when I do, and I say, “Daddy loves you anyway even if I miss some things that you say.”
And my son breaks into a big smile, eyes sparkling, nodding. He knows. He understands. Plus, I understand too, and try harder each time. I haven’t worn hearing aids for a long time, because I wanted to stop wearing them, plus I need new ear molds..but I may start wearing them again just to communicate with my son. As long he is taught sign language, I will accomodate my son when he speaks verbally by wearing the hearing aids.
Closing comment…life can be a challenge, life has its’ struggles, but as long we do it in a loving manner and in patience, and in trying always, we can do it without the meddling of hearing people who thinks they know everything, plus we don’t have to say “hearing people knows everything,” that totally undercuts our true potential, wisdom, intelligence, intuition, and above all, LOVE which covers all limitations which doesn’t have be, otherwise if we let somebody tell us that.
And I don’t. But the hearing people won’t let it go, and even Deaf loved ones closest to us won’t let it go too. It’s the hearing way that is right, and the Deaf way that is wrong, that is their perception. Oh please.
The only mistake I made was to get frustrated because hearing people always have their way. But I am past that point and have learned.
I can now just be positive, be constructive, meet halfway, read lips, wear the hearing aids, just do everything to accomodate other people, even if it’s to appease to other hearing people that think they know everything. It’s for my son, not for them. My son is only 5 years old.
I laugh at the statement “Hearing know everything” I laugh.. I am around hearing people more but love to be in both world… hearing and deaf world. I have see hearing people at different levels so I know they don’t know everything. As for “My hearing friend” I like to bring that up when they meet other deaf people because I don’t want deaf people to start signing fast in front of them when they are new, etc.. so if I said my “my hearing friend” or “hearing friend” then deaf people won’t sign fast to them, especially if they are new to sign language. I also bring up “my hearing friend” when it’s impossible for deaf person to know about a certain thing because we can’t hear, like for example, I recently have issue about hearing people don’t speak exact English in their everyday speaking and if I discuss with deaf person, they probably would look at me and think I am making up story because I am deaf and how would I know?? but if I said My hearing friend told me that they don’t speak exact English then that will help defense my story. But I do understand in other way that we should not said “my hearing friend for everything”. You bring up good topic and I enjoy many of your other vlogs …keep up!!!
TIME TO CHANGE!!!! BIG TIME!!!! I continue to be shocked of numerous well educated deaf with “Hearing know…” and have you.
A story I heard, of a person preparing for deaf cruise. Chose to have a hearing friend purchase flight ticket and other needed reservation. This person believed, since the person is hearing. Will be able to get great deal. AWK!!! Turn out, deal were not great. Other deaf friend got much better deal. Like you say, it is the know how.
My sister who happen to be hearing [SMILE!} stopped at my office. We naturally started signing. One of my co worker, fluent with sign languae, joined us. From the conversation, it was clear she was not sure if my sister was hearing. As my sister left the office, we ran into my supervisor. I introduced my supervisor to my sister, verbally. Then turn to my sister, out of habit, signed my supervisor’s name. My supervisor clearly was uncertain what to do, other than offer her hand and smile. LOL!!!!
I’m the deaf Chief Engineer at Courtyard by Marriott. I kept telling the resturant manager we need new Ice Machine that will make more ice faster. No No you wrong. It’s not working no no etc etc. He think big and called someone over to fix it. Results????? SAME SAME. I feel good I TOLD U. No more argue with me hehehe!!!!! Many stories there. Even one time Almost wasted $5,000 for new hot water heater. I told them it’s the pipe leaking not the tank. They doublecheck what I told them found I’m right. LISTEN TO DEAF damn it!!!!
