How Safe are Your Kids and/or Teens?
Ok….here goes (Taking up on the challenges posted to me)
This is blog about cyber safety for children and teenagers. This is going to be a quick & short blog (It’s summer time!). There is a link at the bottom for more information. You can also do a search online and find LOTS of information. Some of these safety measures may be good for adults too if they wish to avoid some of the things that DRMZZ had to deal with, in addition to other deaf vloggers. That was something!
I think that most of us adults can deal with most of the things that happens online to us unless it has to do with identity theft, social engineering, Phishing, etc (That’s for another time!) and get things resolved, yet, I’ve notice several bogs by deaf kids and teens that announces personal information on their blogs and vlogs.
Strangers have located kids by having available information such as:
Last Name
Name of Your School
Name of Your Sports Team
Town You Live In
Places Where You Hang Out
Kids and Teens need to be as anonymous as possible.
There have been abductions and stalkers on kids and teens due to the information these predators have on these kids/teens. Parents need to be proactive to ensure their kids are safe. We don’t want to unnecessarily scare them, but, we need to teach them to learn to be responsible when it comes to safety.
If your children’s site lets them control who can enter their site, similar to what facebook or myspace can do, use it. They should allow only those they know and trust.
In a Chat room, encourage your children to never use their real name. Use a nickname. They should never share any personal information about themselves in a Chat Room.
“Protect your Information!!!!”
There is a site called
That has many other great information about keeping your kids and teens safe when they are using the computer. (Including keeping your computer safe too)Keep Safe!
