We ain’t no freak show

Didn’t your mama tell you not to stare at people? Oh we should fucking forgive them when they are mesmerized, and forget to not stare at us when we’re communicating in our beautiful language. It’s ok to look, but fucking stop the staring! Stare any longer or harder, we’ll start charging you for the circus freak show. Listen to your mama, dammnit. Or does your mama stare too?

Dear “Angry”: Have you thought of the possibility that you are being stared at because of the noises you make? Most of us deafies make alot of strange sounds when they are signing. My husband says I “hum” when I am talking on the tty! And so on. I always like to think there is a simple explanation, rather than go around resenting hearing people. For myself, I have more problems with children staring than adults, they wonder why I sound “different”!
Doesn’t make it ok! Is it ok to stare at midgets? Retards? People of dubious ethnic origin?
NO. It’s not ok to stare at deaf people either, even if they make noise!
P.S. I know it’s your blog and all, but it would be nice if someone (namely me, an angry deaf woman) could submit an entry once in a while.
pretty please?

Sometimes to save your own sanity you have to adjust to the rest of the world. Midgets? Yes, I admit, I take a second look, tho I am too mature and polite to STARE.
People resent WHAT THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND. Here in my town, which is small, I have no problem and everyone treats me beautifully and yes, I have a deaf voice, tho I try to control it with my families help.
Nothing is ever as it seems.
Dear Angry Deaf Man,
I know that this post may be “old” but while reading all of your posts, there had been some times that you’ve cracked me up. Your ways of showing aggravations toward some stupid, ignorant hearing people and your ways of putting the words together are certainly as funny as hell! We have a lot in common and I admire all of your aggravations.

I am a hearing parent, and I admit to staring at deaf people when they sign. I do it to see if I can follow along, to practice following a native signer. I don’t really care what they are signing about, I just want the experience. When my son signs, he’s very clean and precise, and since he doesn’t yet sign SUPER fast, I can follow along.
Here’s something you may want to think about as well, the next time you are feeling so angry with the hearing world. The stereotypes that you feel the hearing world uses to define you - stupid, uneducated, dumb - is in itself, stereotyping. Prejudice is prejudice.
And thankfully, all of the “retards” are too retarded to read, or they might be insulted or hurt by such an archaic and derogatory classification.

I have to admit I’m guilty of staring at deaf people that are signing but I do it to try to pick up more worlds in sign language. I’m profoundly deaf and wear a hearing aid that helps a little bit but not enough. I’ve been trying to learn sign language for years, took many, many classes but still have problems following you experts. I love watching and am so thrilled when I can make out a few words, makes me feel like those classes were worthwhile after all. Sorry if I make you feel uncomfortable, I never even thought about that before.
