To Drolz (#2),

"...why would anyone want to stand in the way of such a great linguistic and cognitive head start?"

Answer: Money. Moolah. The Almighty Buck. And the power & control that comes with that greenie thing.

Deaf children between the ages of 0 and 7 years are a gold mine to the AG Bell Association. So many "specialists" are employed. Insurance companies and cochlear companies' pockets are lined plenty. Consultants make a quick buck off dispensing "advice" to schools.

All ($$$) roads lead back to the AG Bell Assoc., which is supposedly a non-profit organization, backed by the very rich and very for-profit Volta Bureau. Volta/AGBAD owns AVI (Auditory Verbal Institute- that company that does the AVT)-- and places their money in the stock market. Then the top AGBAD executives are paid a handsome salary. See the whole thing, eh?

We are being screwed royally. Just like those clueless & sleeping humans in the movie, "The Matrix".

Thank goodness DBC's here to unplug us all from the Matrix.

I still can't let go of the irony behind this -- it's simply mind-boggling. That hearing babies are encouraged to sign while deaf babies are often denied the opportunity... it makes no sense at all.

When my first two kids signed as babies/toddlers we didnt make a big deal about it. It just seemed like the natural thing to do.

But with my third child, recent events made me realize I needed to pay closer attention to how much impact ASL has on language acquisition. I was then able to ascertain that at age 11 months, my daughter was communicating at the level of a 2-year old.

And to think... many deaf babies are denied this window of opportunity to acquire language with the 100% access that only ASL can provide. I simply cannot understand how anyone would want to deprive a child in such a manner.

If so many deaf babies are at risk for language delays and its proven that they can communicate effectively via ASL long before hearing babies are developmentally able to speak... why would anyone want to stand in the way of such a great linguistic and cognitive head start?

Clearly, more ASL advocacy is needed. I appreciate DBC's efforts to enlighten those who might otherwise not know what they're missing.

It may or may not be surprising to realize that when Edward Miner Gallaudet visited the oral schools in Europe and come back and gave his report (in 1867) he said the following:

QUOTE

The real point of difference then between Heinecke and de L'Epee is discovered to lie in a purely philosophical question, the practical solution of which, in a hundred years of experience, proves the former [oralism] to be plainly wrong, and the latter [using natural signed languages] as clearly in the right.

UNQUOTE

In other words, he is saying that the past one hundred years prior to 1867 already proved oralism to be plainly wrong.
