Hi John,
I read your words: Just because Alexander “invented” the telephone....

I want to mention one thing about AGB: AGB was cheater and frauder.

CLARIFICATION: AGB did NOT invent the telephone. Antonio Meucci(Italian-American) actually invented it and filed a patent but his wife sold some of his patents because of his health reasons (I do not remember exactly)..

In 2002, US House of Representatives (H. Res. 269) declared that AGB's patent for the telephone was based on "fraud and misrepresentation." More information at http://hnn.us/articles/802.html

John,
Thumbs up and high-five on both hands! Hope millions people will learn from this. I wish I could be there to join you.

Gypsy and Former Leaper,
ASL is 100% in Deaf world.. yes, but you forgot about the education. Most deaf students understand better with ASL and bi-bi. In hearing world, there are more hearing people learning ASL. The more expose of ASL, the more students at schools and colleges would take ASL class. I have heard from hearing people that they enjoyed learning ASL very much. ASL can be also useful in hearing world, too!

John,

Thumbs Up! Wish I could be there physically but will be thinking of you all during that time. It is about time be brought to light the difference between ASL as a natural language and AGBell's belief that oralism is the only way to be sucessful in life. This protest and the media converage will raise awareness and have parents begin to question the biased information they got regarding the best communication method for their deaf child. Keep me posted on your progress.

This is stupid. I went to LEAP and AGBell was totally inclusive of all forms of communications, ASL, oral, lipreading, or anything else. If anything, I learned so much more about what was available to assist d/Deaf people.

Gypsy has a point - ASL is 100% effective in the deaf world, but when it comes to the hearing world, where most interactions should take place, knowing ASL will not help.

Hello,
It is good to know that we are continuing our deaf civil rights movement. I was raised in mainstream and deaf school and I can understand how much you guys are frustrated with AGBELL organization ban on ASL. I wish I can show up over there but I am in Michigan right now. I want to make a comment here to show them my full support for there. I also glad that Alison has brought up some of thoughts and I really hopefully that you guys will take her advice as well. Take care. :-)

As a hearing parent of a Deaf teen, I support the protest. I don't know too much about AGBell, but I did realize from the limited exposure I garnered when looking for services for my daughter, that they do not support ASL. I had no idea the organization BANS the use of ASL. ASL is a language, with all the features of other foreign languages and then some! Banning someone's language is to deprive one of a basic human behavior...communication.

Hi :)

Kudos to you for taking a stand! Wanted to share a couple of thoughts:

-Do you need a permit to peacefully assemble? Different states have different laws about such things.
-Make sure that your posters/signs have clear messages (short and to the point) so that the media and passerby can understand what the protest is about
-Make sure you have a press statement prepared- something you can hand out to media personnel who show up
-Have you been able to recruit volunteer interpreters to be there in case media or security show up to converse with you?
-Would be nice to have someone scout the area- see what is available in terms of public facilities (BATHROOMS!!!) :)
-Bring plenty of water and food- keep that energy up!!
-Have you decide where you will assemble? Nice to post a specific location so people know exactly where to find you
-Are you going to have someone blog while you're there? Send immediate updates, pictures?
-What type of protest will you be doing? (sit ins?) How long will you stay there? I read that you posted 27-28th, but am wondering if you plan to stay there the whole time (including overnight)?
-Are you going to wear anything specific (color, symbol?) Nice to have cohesiveness in this form- for instance, everyone wearing black t-shirts.

You probably already thought of all of the above things, but wanted to make sure we're all on the same page :)

Good LUCK!!!

Hi Al,

I think so, they are the ones that advocate speech and not sign language, bilingual philosophy. They will learn from us and so will the media.

We are not going to be troublemakers and will have a positive attitude to info the public that AGBell and their cronies to try bilingual(ASL and English) a chance for deaf children.

I will post tomorrow more about the protest and guidelines to have an effective and positive side of the protest.

Hi John

While I appreciate your concerns, is this the event to protest effectively? Instead of policy makers, only neurologists and speech pathologists will be attending this event.

Awesome! Go for peace protest!! I suggest that each of us to spread the words into our local deaf communites all over the nation, especially for the deaf people who have went through the oralist system and encourage them to attend this AGB convention and protest. That would give more powerful message with the group of people.
My thoughts and spirits are with you all through this process. I am willing to spread the words to local deaf communities about this to help you out with the protest!
