Amy demonstrates a promotional give-away, the pack-of-6 SONIC® Wacky Pack® Kids’ Meal toy that was distributed through SONIC® Drive-In Restaurants in 2006.

You may wonder what is SONIC®? SONIC® Drive-In Restaurants, which is the nation’s largest drive-in chain serving hamburgers, sandwiches, Coney dogs, and famous Slushes to customers from coast to coast and in Mexico. Today, SONIC has more than 3,000 Drive-Ins. SONIC® offers Wacky Pack® Kids’ Meal which comes with a meal and free promotional fun ‘toy’.

Here is a pack of 6 SONIC’s® Wacky Pack® Kids’ Meal “Speak in Sign Language” promotional give-way set. Look at these pictures below that explains about American Sign Language, and it is an excellent way to promote ASL!

This set has six card decks, which includes information about American Sign Language, ASL alphabet and signs! Each deck comes with their topics and they are:

Deck #1: Numbers & Colors
Deck #2: Simple Phrases
Deck #3: Animals
Deck #4: People
Deck #5: Food
Deck #6: Feelings & Emotions

What is really surprising to me that this promotion give-way was distributed in 2006, which was so recent. Honestly, I have never heard or read about this. It was only two years ago!

I decided to check online to find out bit more about this SONIC® Wacky Pack® “Speak In Sign Language” promotion, and I came across with a very few links about this wonderful marketing tool.

There is one link from Kansas School for the Deaf’s monthly school newsletter, Kansas Contact published in April 2006. Please go to the link that takes you to the PDF file: Kansas Contact : Volume 5, Issue 3. Go to page 3. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file.

In this article, Kansas School for the Deaf was approached by one company called C3: Creative Consumer Concepts, which is an integrated brand marketing agency. C3 works with SONIC® Drive-In Restaurants on their promotional Wacky Pack® give-away. The designers of C3 contacted staff members at KSD because they wanted to be sure that the individual signs they were designing were correct.

Here is another link that I discovered that is related to this promotion, Courtney Campbell who is
lead designer/illustrator on the SONIC/Wacky Pack account, and she has 5+ years of professional experience with graphic design. With this involvement with this promotional project, Ms. Campbell received a national recognition of SONIC Speak in Sign Language premiums within the deaf/education community in 2006. See the link: Courtney Campbell’s resume

I am very IMPRESSED with this amazing partnership between KSD and C3 representing a large restaurant company! Kudos to Kansas School for the Deaf! Hand waves for your successful partnership. Thank you Courtney Campbell and C3 company made a very wise decision to contact KSD for consultation, thus having this successful promotion marketing American Sign Language to the mass audience!

Now, that is one of the successful marketing techniques using American Sign Language.

What’s next? McDonald’s® Happy Meal® promotion or Burger King’s® Kids Meal promotion?

Think about it.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published an article about AG Bell and Deaf Bilingual Coalition conferences being held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin starting tomorrow for the weekend. This article was written by Jennine Aquino and Annysa Johnson.

The link to this article is: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel : AG Bell and deaf coalition conferences differ on cochlear implants

Amy Cohen Efron wrote an e-mail response to Ms. Aquino about this article.

____________________________________

Dear Ms. Aquino,

My name is Amy Cohen Efron, and I live in Tucker, GA. I was given an opportunity to read your article that was linked to DeafRead, the web based aggregator of all kinds of blogs, vlogs (video logs) and articles that focuses on topics about deaf, Deaf Culture and language (emphasizing American Sign Language). The website address is: www.deafread.com

First, I appreciate your time to write up this article and I am very compelled to write my impressions about your article. To be forthright, I am disappointed about your article, since it is unbalanced and slated to one perspective.

This article appeared to be framed at the favor for people who chose to use listening and speaking as the sole approach to teach deaf and hard of hearing children with or without implants. It is very unfortunate to read this way.

First of all, I would like to ask you why did Milwaukee Journal Sentinel used the capitals for AG Bell, and lower case letters for deaf coalition? That appeared as if this article is already biased from the beginning that AG Bell is highly regarded than Deaf Bilingual Coalition. It is unfair to see “deaf coalition” without the key word, Bilingual.

You started with an article by displaying the family of three children who are deaf and using implants as if they are ‘normal’ with playing basketball at their driveway. Where is another example of families of deaf children who wear cochlear implants and using both American Sign Language and Spoken English? That is a very unfair introduction to your article.

Somehow, you may have some kind of assumption that Deaf Bilingual Coalition (DBC) bans spoken language? It is not true. The DBC believes strongly to add American Sign Language as a crucial part of language development for deaf babies who have not received cochlear implants between ages of 6 months to 1 year. This is a crucial language development window that we want to make sure the young infant receives signs, then once they get implanted, continue using signs PLUS spoken language. I don’t see that kind of emphasis on this article. You presented as if there is one option or an another option. Not both.

Why did you use the words, protests? The Deaf Bilingual Coalition is not about protest or demonstration. It is an educational conference with American Sign Language celebration rally. Where did you get an impression that it was a protest? Since 1890’s, The American Association to the Promote the Teaching of Speech of the Deaf was founded by Alexander Graham Bell, which is known as in present, AG Bell, have always hosted their conferences separately from National Association of the Deaf for over 110 years. It is an historical first that Deaf Bilingual Coalition formed a national conference in conjunction with AG Bell International Convention at the same time, to present the families of deaf children with options!

For many years, many parents of deaf child(ren) does not have an access to all of the options available, and unfortunately the vast influence and propaganda of AG Bell with their slogan “Listen and Talk” attracts many families to take this choice without realizing of the long-term consequences.

(Removed one paragraph due to DeafRead’s guidelines)

To learn indepth about Deaf Bilingual Coalition, check www.dbcusa.org

Sincerely yours,
Amy Cohen Efron

To learn bit more about “The Greatest Irony”

When “The Greatest Irony” first was put on the Internet as a four-part series on March 17, 2007, the response from the community was staggering. After receiving messages sent from around the world, Amy Cohen Efron realized that she had touched upon an issue that brought differing, often clashing perspectives. The video, comparing two of the most popular and fastest-growing language programs for hearing babies and Deaf babies, set off heated, passionate discussions among people from all walks of life. It became clear that the majority agreed that it was unfair to deny deaf babies the opportunity to learn sign language, especially with American Sign Language’s proven success rate among babies, hearing or deaf.

On the About.com Deafness forum run by Jamie Berke, “The Greatest Irony” was recognized as the “Blog of the Week.” Berke had this to say about the thought-provoking blog:

“In her signed vlog masterpiece (a transcript is thoughtfully provided), “The Greatest Irony”, Amy Cohen Efron discusses and contrasts the benefits of baby sign language for hearing babies with the auditory verbal training given to deaf babies. For example, she notes that one of the objectives of baby sign language for hearing children is that it reduces frustration; auditory verbal therapy does not have the same objective. The irony is that while the hearing babies are encouraged to sign, the deaf babies have to use whatever hearing they have, without sign language. This vlog is a must viewing.”

Buried underneath the massive pile of old computer peripherals, cables and wires, I’ve discovered a gadget that was packed neatly away in one of my dusty boxes.

It was the NXi’s Nexcom 300 Modem A vintage piece of engineering marvel. Believe it or not, it was only 14 years old.

See pictures:

This device was created by this company, called Nexus Engineering, established in 1990 (only 18 years ago, imagine!), which was renamed to NXi Communications, Inc. in 1995. This company tried to develop a software called Nextalk that was used to replace standalone TTYs with a computer-based communication software. At the end of 1994, NXi released the NexCom 300 modem, and this modem is capable of connecting speeds from TTY (baudot) to 19200 bps. I have an external NexCom300 with power adapter and software with it. See link about this company’s background history.

Fast forward - 14 years later…

Right now, I have videophones (a collection of ‘em - Sorenson’s VP200, DLink’s DVC-1000, SnapVRS!’s Ojo and Viable’s VPAD), along with my trusty Sidekick3 pager. I also have a vintage AT&T TTY sitting on my kitchen counter connected directly to my landline phone. I own 20-inch iMac computer, that comes with iSight along with the HOVRS’s widget and iChat program.

My, how the time flies within 14 years, enough to make my head spin!

Now, scratching my head… what am I gonna to do with this thing? Toss it out or sell? Any takers?

Everyone,

Jerome Cain brought this attention on DeafVideo.TV about Gallaudet’s Theatre Department Official Statement, and three individual’s responses. He created video ASL versions of these statements. I would like to host them on my blog. Thank you for all of your work, Jerome!

To support Jerome’s work, please visit his website about his film:Unity for Gallaudet

Now… here are the statements below: Go to Gallaudet’s Theatre Arts Department website

The statement was written by:
Angela V. Farrand, M.F.A. Acting Chair of Theatre Arts
(* MFA, Arizona State University)

May 8, 2008

We will no longer hold the auditions here this coming Monday (May 12, 2008), This is because we at Theatre Arts are committed to the cultivation and empowerment of our majors as the next generation of Deaf theatre artists, educators, and leaders with the paramount expectation of equality.

Casting Deaf actors for a film where a hearing actor has already been cast in the (not “a”) lead Deaf role runs the risk of creating 2 negative perceptions: 1) that Deaf actors are somehow unequal and secondary now that the main Deaf role has already been filled by a non-Deaf actor, and 2) that Deaf actors cannot be entrusted with the lead role of a mainstream film, even if the lead role happens to be a Deaf character. Marginalization is not a value supported by the Theatre Arts Department, nor can it ever be justified.

Holding auditions here on Monday the 12th as scheduled would only reinforce and enable those 2 perceptions. We cannot, and will not, in good conscience do that to our students, and contradict the spirit of our commitment.

Angela V. Farrand, Acting Chair - The Theatre Arts Department

These four individuals (Farrand, Holt, Sinnott and Williams) presented their opinions about the controversy. Please pay close attention to their credentials, as they earned their degrees from various places (Arizona State University, New York University’s famed Tisch School of the Arts, Boston University and George Washington University). These people are professional and they are attuned with the entertainment industry.

These statements were to let K’Dee Productions to understand about what they did was not helpful, especially these two points as Ms. Farrand outlined:

1) Deaf actors are somehow unequal and secondary since the main Deaf role has already been filled by a non-Deaf actor.

2) Deaf actors cannot be entrusted with the lead role of a mainstream film, even if the lead role happens to be a Deaf character.

Remember, it is Theater Arts’ Department position. I know that many of you support and oppose the decision. What I am seeing is that it is good for the academic institution, like Gallaudet University took the stand and made their position known. Controversial or not, it is the marginalization that is not a value supported by the Theatre Arts Department, and this cannot be ever be justified.

I, myself, do respect the individual’s right to decide whatever he/she choose to do that is ‘appropriate’; AND I do respect the decision that is well thought-out considering all of the ramifications that comes with the decision. Now, Matt, how can we be inspired with your decision? Remember, the key word, INSPIRED.

Remember, Matt…never underestimate the power of Deaf role model. Having Deaf role models (oral, ASL, CI, HoH, or late-deafened) are very important to deaf children.

Here’s the famous painting done by Chuck Baird displaying at Gallaudet University, that I want to share with you.

There is one part of the whole painting still sends chills up in my spine, and I get very inspired by that. I hope you can consider how much you have inspired many Deaf children and adults for what you are doing as a professional wrestler.

“I won this award by keeping my mouth shut and I think I’ll do it again.” – Jane Wyman.

Jane Wyman was quoted during her Oscar acceptance speech for the Best Actress award in 1948. She won for her role as a “deaf-mute” in Johnny Belinda. That was the shortest acceptance speech on record.

Historically, this is not the first time that mainstream cinema casting a hearing person as a deaf person. This has happened. This has happened over and over.

Here are the examples:

Johnny Belinda - 1948
Calendar Girl – 1993

and…

Hamill – (under production)

It is dishonest for the production company to cast a hearing person as a deaf person. This is tantamount to the practice of ‘black-face’.
Al Jolson, The Jazz Singer 1927

We all know that the ASL-using, culturally Deaf people have been virtually invisible in cinema. While a few Deaf actors have gotten some mainstream exposure, the films and television programs they see only reinforce stereotypical views.

When Johnny Belinda was released in 1948, this movie drew different reactions from the deaf community. Some deaf people were delighted about Hollywood’s acknowledgment of the existence of deaf people. However, other deaf people were disappointed how Belinda was portrayed as a deaf person. Look at the picture of Jane Wyman depicting her character.
Jane Wyman, Johnny Belinda - 1948

In 1992, Calendar Girl cast Kurt Fuller, a hearing actor with no previous experience in sign language, as an ASL-using Deaf character. Watch a short video clip of Calendar Girl, where you can see Fuller in a dark blue suit. Play Quicktime version - 10 seconds long

<param name=wmode" value="transparent" />

National Association of the Deaf launched a nationwide boycott of the Calendar Girl with coordinated protests, and the movie proved a commercial flop and was quickly yanked from distribution. Watch a short video segment from Deaf Mosaic’s Gil Eastman reporting this controversy. Play Quicktime version - 2.38 minutes long - Closed Captioned

Then, Hollywood learned its lesson and on a regular basis, has cast deaf actors in studio movies, from Marlee Matlin in Children of a Lesser God to Tyrone Giordano in Family Stone.

And now, Hamill…

The brief synoposis of Hamill produced by K’Dee Miller Productions was distributed:

“Hamill tells the story of what it takes to be a champion, on and off the mat. Raised among those with the ability to hear, Matt later finds himself no less an outsider amidst the Deaf Community. But through sheer determination, he uses his disability as an asset, and becomes not only the first deaf wrestler to win a National Collegiate Championship, but an inspirational force to both hearing and deaf alike.”

And then, the company’s statement:

There’s never been a mainstream Hollywood film, open to both hearing and deaf that fully captures the colorful visuals of American Sign Language and the intricate layers of Deaf Culture, until now. Hamill is not a Silent Film specifically created for the deaf audience, but a film in which the deaf and hearing can view the theatrical release in unison, therefore introducing a new genre to mainstream audiences: The Deaf Foreign Film. We plan on introducing this new genre by employing the following elements:

•	The use of subtitles throughout the film allowing the Deaf to enjoy the cinematic experience alongside the hearing
•	Employing a unique cinematography style which captures the ASL and remains visually stimulating
•	Finding interesting and artistic ways of depicting the Deaf Perspective while keeping the hearing community involved
•	Giving several Deaf Actors a chance at showcasing their talents on the big screen

The fact remains that the production company have chosen to disregard THEIR own company statement AND the deaf community in casting Eben Kostbar as Matt Hamill.

The question remains…

Why K’Bee Miller Productions, LCC did not announce that Eben Kostbar had already been cast?

They were fully aware of the controversy that surrounds casting a hearing actor as a deaf person. Their lack of full disclosure, on a greater level, indicates disrespect to the deaf community.

In summary, casting a hearing actor denies deaf actors the opportunity to prove themselves. The deaf community has dealt this issue over and over again, time and again. And each time, the right answer has emerged, people will look at this movie and say, “Why wasn’t a deaf person cast”?

If the movie gets made, Matt Hamill will have a movie. In the end, who suffers? Us.

Subject: Matt Hamill Statement–Update 5/9/08

For all those concerned, Matt Hamill’s stance and official statement on the Hamill project is below. I would appreciate you forward it along to all the necessary channels, as you did with the casting notice and subsequently the casting controversy.

As for the auditions, we continue to support our original vision, as well as Matt Hamill’s, and will continue our search for Deaf talent to play the other Deaf roles. Although RIT and Gallaudet have recently chose not to support our casting endeavors, the hearing community remains true to this vision, and therefor our casting will still occur in the New York City area. I encourage all interested contenders to contact casting(at)xxxx.xxx to schedule an appointment for a New York City time slot.

Look for an official statement in the next few days on behalf of K’Dee Miller Productions, LLC, Eben Kostbar, and the entire Matt Hamill Production Crew. We want to thank all of our supporters, deaf and hearing, who have remained constant in bringing this vision to life, even through the recent controversy.

Sincerely,

In response to the cancellation of auditions hosted by two major Universities (Gallaudet University and NTID/RIT), Matt Hamill recently made a statement, and it is on his website.

Excerpts of his statement - See the complete statement on his website: www.matthamill.com

It has recently come to my attention that there is a bit of controversy surrounding the movie “Hamill” which is based on my life story. Apparently there are some members of the deaf community who feel strongly that a deaf actor should play the role of me. Two casting calls, one at Gallaudet and one at my alma matter RIT, have been canceled in protest. I want everyone to know, I respect the fact that we all want to celebrate deaf culture. I celebrate deaf culture as much as anyone. However, it was my choice to have Eben Kostbar play me. Eben, along with Joe McKelheer, are the reason this project even exists….. The decision has been made and is final. I hope we can put this issue to rest. I believe there are a lot more important issues in the world.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Also, Eben Kostbar made a ’statement’ with his letter.

This letter is received from a confidential source. In this letter, Eben Kostbar wrote a letter explaining why he is involved with this project.

I’m an actor, and like most actors, we are always yearning for quality roles and projects. Unfortunately in today’s Hollywood, it’s very competitive and quality roles only go to the top 1% of the ‘known’ actors. This unfortunate statistic is what initially led me to develop projects that would create meaningful opportunities for me as an actor and writer. After developing a successful short film called, Karma Café, I began to extensively search for a feature film idea that would challenge me as both an actor and a writer. After reading countless scripts and discussing several ideas with my writing partner, Joseph Mckelheer, I stumbled across the UFC reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter 3″ in which Matt Hamill was one of the fighters hopeful of winning the show and a UFC contract. I was immediately intrigued by Matt and wanted to learn more about his life story as it was evident that it was unique, emotional and unquestionably inspiring. I grew up wrestling and loving underdog sports films because, like many athletes, I wasn’t blessed with perfect genetics. I instantly saw the potential for a film and decided to contact Matt. Now, over two years later, this film has been developed and nurtured to the point where it’s at today.

Now getting to the heart of the matter, which is the debate over a hearing person playing the role of a deaf person. I’ll be completely honest. It started with me being an actor and creating an opportunity for myself. At that time I was naive and had no prior exposure to the Deaf Culture, their thoughts, feelings and impressions of the hearing world. It never even crossed my mind that there would be opposition to a hearing person playing a deaf role. It was not until I immersed myself in the Deaf Culture that I realized this could be an issue. However, while I was documenting Matt Hamill’s story and writing the script, I was constantly surprised at the commonalities between Matt and I. Sharing a wrestling background and physically resembling each other was just the beginning of our common traits. After countless hours and dedication studying Matt’s interactions, behaviors, and voice patterns I realized, more importantly, the shocking similarities in our personalities as well. It was at that point, after developing such a strong connection to the character of Matt, that I realized I was meant to play this role whether I was hearing or not. In addition, through the process of reaching out to the Deaf Community, immersing myself in the Deaf Culture, becoming fluent in ASL and following Matt around for weeks, I have new respect and have fallen completely in love with the Deaf Culture, language and all its beautiful nuances. It was during this humbling process that I realized the debate of a hearing person playing a deaf role could be an issue. However, because of my new exposure and extensive dedication during this process I know I am 100% ready to live up to the high standards the deaf community deserves and rightfully demands.

Recently, an oral deaf actor friend of mine was complaining to me about how he was tired of being considered for only deaf roles and I immediately told him to do something about it, “You should write something and create a project where you play a hearing role.” Now, I’m not trying to convince anyone who is adamant about deaf roles having to be played by deaf actors, or hearing roles having to be played by hearing actors. However, please think of this: I helped birth a project, which will educate a large audience about Deaf Culture while at the same time presenting opportunities for the deaf community in front and behind the camera.

Besides the role of Matt, there are several other large roles within the script that will allow Deaf actors to showcase themselves on the big screen as well as many opportunities for Deaf filmmakers to become active in the making of this film. This production team remains very dedicated in involving the Deaf in every way possible, because film, at its best state, is a collaborative universal medium. Without the guidance and support of the Deaf, we would not have been able to create a film that embodies all the great intricacies and richness of their people.

I urge you to be open-minded and review this project in its entirety and try to understand that this is not a deaf movie and it is not a hearing movie. It is simply a movie created to stand the test of time, inspire, educate, and expose a beautiful culture to a widespread audience. Also, from the bottom of my heart, know that I am taking this role very seriously and I promise you that I will represent your culture and community with accuracy, respect and, most importantly, the utmost grace.

I want to finish by saying that I am eternally grateful for all the support I have received thus far and I look forward to us continuing to work together as we bring Matt’s incredible story to the silver screen. Thank you so much for your time and feel free to contact our production team with any questions.

Gallaudet University decided not to host auditions with K’Dee Miller Productions, LLC for HAMILL:The Movie on May 12, 2008.

See Gallaudet’s website indicating cancellation.

Matt Hamill is known as the “The Hammer”, The Ultimate Fighter. He is Deaf American wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter.

I just got off the phone this morning with the Theater Department and the Public Relations Department of Gallaudet University and they confirmed the cancellation. I asked why…

Gallaudet University’s Public Relations department learned that the K’Dee Miller Productions have already decided that the leading role for the film as Matt Hamill will be performed by the hearing person, an actor/writer. This person name is Eben Kostbar.

I verified by calling the casting director of K’Dee Miller Productions at 10:20 am this morning and the casting director did confirm that Gallaudet University decided not to host their facilities for auditions. This casting director said it has to do with having a hearing person to act the leading role for Matt Hamill.

Come back for a follow up story… to be continued.

Amy Cohen Efron here: KUDOS to Gallaudet University’s Public Relations and Theater Arts department for taking a STRONG stand to make this decision not to host auditions!

Rochester Institute of Technology, you will be hosting this audition next Wednesday, May 14th - what is your stand to this issue? New York City, what about you for Thursday, May 15th?
