$1,000,000 to Deaf Schools - Follow up
Hello Everyone!
As you may already have ‘heard’ about Georgia’s State Superintendent of Schools, Kathy Cox who won one million dollars from the TV game show, “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” on September 5, 2008…
AND…
She gave away her winnings to three state schools (two deaf schools and one blind school). Please visit this link.
This blog is to follow-up about what happened…
Please watch the video to give you a general idea how it looked like. (I noticed something is wrong with the video because there were some missing segments from Good Morning America. Sorry! Scroll down to see the link to the video from Good Morning America.)
Last Friday, ABC’s Good Morning America contacted Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) informing that Kathy Cox is planning to visit school for the interview. With so much anticipation, the AASD staff were preparing for the interview on Tuesday early morning. An huge TV truck with satellite video uplink came and parked at the front of the school around 4:45am. The group of TV technicians set up a lot of wires, camera, sound and lighting equipment all over in the room. The dark classroom became very bright with floodlights and spotlights aiming at filming area.
Kathy Cox was at the middle in the classroom surrounded with five Deaf students sitting on their tables watching at the camera for bit over 30 minutes. Then, the interview started at 7:43am and it went for only 30 seconds. AASD interpreter was there to convey the students what Ms. Cox was saying. The interview went by very quickly.

Lastly, but not the least… I gotta to have a pix of myself with Kathy Cox! Maybe I can ‘rub’ off some lady luck out of her!

Wish me luck!
Best,

Lucky to have Kathy Cox in your state. We need one like that in Virginia. Too bad for us.

I really admire Kathy Cox! It is so rare that AASD, GSB & GSD got the attention from the media.
I wonder if Kathy Cox knows about your website?
I hope she will read it.
Have a great year at AASD!!

Wonderful story.
I got the People Magazine and Kathy is in it. It’s on the stand right now.(Actually People magazine tends to distribute one week (Thursdays/Fridays) before the official date print on the cover in the magazine. For instance, the people magazine states that it is on Sept 29th, then, they distribute and is on the stand on Sept 22nd or before.)
So go and grab the magazine and it will end tomorrow or Friday.
I always subscribe the People magazine for long time. It’s my favorite magazine.
Congratulations, Deaf and Blind Schools! Be proud for being a Georgian!

What a generous philanthropy! Also the schools received excellent and free publicity, exposing the country to the presence of deaf schools with ASL and blind schools.

I think it’s a shame that Kathy Cox doesn’t work with Dr. Frank Nesbit to improve education for Deaf/HH students in mainstream schools. Where is the money, assistance and support that Deaf/HH students need in the public school system? Somehow those students got overlooked and left out completely.

Get it while it lasts - it probably not “legal”.

I watched the show. It was fun to see an educator do what none of the others could do. That just goes to show you that every professional owes their job to an educator. Congrats Georgia deaf schools.
